REMEDIAL INSTRUCTION IN ENGLISH (ELEC 2)
Introduction to Remedial Instruction
Module 1A
I. INTRODUCTION
Group Discussion
In small groups, students share their experiences and
discuss strategies that helped or could have helped them. Have students
write about a time they faced a learning obstacle and how they tried to overcome it.
II. INTERACTION
Definition, Purpose, and Scope of Remedial Instruction
Remedial instruction refers to targeted educational interventions designed to help students who are struggling
with fundamental academic skills.
It is aimed at bridging learning gaps and ensuring that learners attain the required competencies in subjects
such as reading, writing, and mathematics.
The purpose of remedial instruction is to provide additional support to students who have fallen behind their
peers, equipping them with the necessary skills to succeed in their academic journey.
The scope of remedial instruction extends from elementary to higher education and can take place in various
settings, including classrooms, tutoring centers, and online platforms.
Historical Perspectives and Theoretical Foundations
Remedial instruction has evolved over the years, with roots tracing back to early 20th-century educational
reforms.
Initially, it focused on basic literacy and numeracy, but over time, it has expanded to encompass diverse
learning difficulties and differentiated instruction techniques.
Theoretical foundations of remedial instruction are grounded in learning theories such as behaviorism,
constructivism, and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which emphasizes the importance of
scaffolding to support learners' progress.
Additionally, cognitive and metacognitive strategies play a significant role in structuring remedial programs to
enhance student engagement and retention.
Differences between Remedial, Special, and Developmental Education
While remedial, special, and developmental education all address learning needs, they differ in focus and
approach. Remedial education specifically targets students who have difficulty keeping up with grade-level
expectations and provides short-term interventions to close learning gaps.
Special education, on the other hand, is designed for students with diagnosed disabilities, requiring
individualized education programs (IEPs) and specialized instructional methods.
Developmental education serves students who may not have mastered prerequisite skills for higher
education, particularly in college settings, and involves preparatory courses to build foundational
competencies.
Role of the Remedial Instructor
diagnosing academic difficulties,
designing and delivering tailored instruction
employing evidence-based teaching methods
continuously assessing student progress.
foster motivation, build students' confidence, and collaborate with parents and educators to create a supportive
learning environment.

Based on the given illustration and its content, conduct an informal surveys among 20 various students
from ISAT U MC. See to it that you have equal representatives from the four major educational programs offered by
the campus (5 from Education program, 5 from HBM/HRT, 5 from InfoTech, 5 from BINDTECH). Rank the
respondents’ response and present the Top 5 responses.
