Reflection on Clinical Rotation

On the 23rd of february 2024, i had my very first clinical rotation since entering
medical school. It was 8-10 am on a Friday, the weather was really nice and I was
especially excited as my rotation was in surgery which is my preferred domain as I
aspire to be a neurosurgeon. I felt really uplifted and motivated to go to the hospital
and experience the patient-doctor interaction in person and to get guidance from
the astounding doctors. As I sat in the surgical demo room of the hospital, I felt
prodigiously privileged to be pursuing my dream despite the rigorous competition
to get into medical school and all the hurdles. I felt a mixture of excitement and
nervousness as I stepped into this new environment. It was an interactive lesson on
the touchy aspects of the medical profession; explaining death, how to make sure
when someone is actually dead, what are the vital signs and important reflexes to
check on a dead body. Our professor also told us the delicacy of breaking the news
of death and empathizing with the patient's family in times of melancholy.
Reflecting on my performance during the rotation, I recognize both strengths and
areas for improvement. My ability to understand, excellent grasp on knowledge
and empathy was a notable strength. However, I identified areas such as time
management, communicating bad news and prioritization where I need to refine
my skills. Moving forward, I aim to enhance these areas through practice and
feedback from mentors. Upon deeper reflection, I realize that clear and concise
communication not only fosters trust between patients and caregivers but also
ensures the delivery of safe and quality care. My first clinical rotation provided
invaluable insights into the realities of healthcare practice.
