CE272: Structural Analysis
Example Problems - Set 1
1. Classify each of the following structures as statically determinate, statically indeterminate, or
unstable. If indeterminate, specify the degree of indeterminacy. If unstable, mention
whether the instability is external or internal or both. Structures (a) to (d) are trusses, (e) to
(f) are beams, and (g) to (j) are frames. All the symbols have usual meaning (e.g., a solid
circle in any frame denotes a hinge).

2. Determine the reactions at the supports for the following structure.
3. Determine the reactions at supports A and B. Note: A is roller, B is fixed, and the connection
at C is through a pin.
4. The beam is subjected to the two concentrated loads as shown. Assuming that the
foundation exerts a linearly varying load distribution on its bottom, determine the load
intensities w1 and w2 for equilibrium in terms of P and L.
5. The crane is pin-connected at A and supported by a smooth collar at B. Determine the roller
placement x of the 800 N load so that it gives the maximum and minimum reactions at the
supports. Calculate these reactions in each case. Neglect the weight of the crane. Require
4 m ≤ 𝑥𝑥 ≤ 8 m.

Solutions
Unstable (concurrent reactions)
(a)
Statically indeterminate to degree 4
b + r = 20 + 4 = 24 > 2n = 20
(External indeterminacy = 1;
Internal indeterminacy = 3)
(b)
Unstable
b+r = 8+3=11<2n=12
(c)
C
D
A
B
Unstable, both internally (panel ABCD)
(d) as well as externally (only 2 reactions)
Statically indeterminate to degree 1
5 unknown reactions (3 at fixed end + 1 at roller
Cable + 1 for cable tension)
4 equations (3 from equilibrium
+ 1 equation of condition for internal hinge)
(e)
Unstable
4 unknown reactions (2 at hinge C + 1 each at rollers A & B)
5 equations (3 from equilibrium + 2 equations of condition at D, as there can be no transfer
of axial force and bending moment at D from one beam to the other)
By observation, beam AB is externally unstable
D
A B C
(f)
A C
Statically indeterminate to degree 5
3b + r = 27 + 6 = 33 unknowns
3n = 24 equations from equilibrium
at joints + 4 equations of condition
due to the two internal hinges (2 per
internal hinge); so total 28 equations
Also, if you cut sections along AB B D
and CD, you get total 18 unknowns.
3x3 = 9 equations from equilibrium
of the three parts + 4 equations of
condition
(g)
Unstable due to local (h)
instability of column AB
Statically determinate
4 unknown reactions
3 equations of equlibrium
+ 1 equation of condition for
internal hinge
(i)
(j)
Unstable (concurrent reactions)
