📌 Important Notes from "Light – Reflection and Refraction" (NCERT Class 10

Physics)

1. Reflection of Light
Laws of Reflection

1️⃣ Angle of incidence (∠i) = Angle of reflection (∠r)

2️⃣ The incident ray, reflected ray, and normal lie in the same plane.

Types of Mirrors & Their Images

Mirror Image Type Nature Size

Plane Mirror Always virtual & upright Same size as object Laterally inverted
Concave Real & inverted (except when Forms real/virtual
Can be larger/smaller
Mirror very close) images
Convex Always virtual, upright & Used in vehicles for a
Mirror diminished wider view

Mirror Formula

1f=1v+1u\frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{v} + \frac{1}{u}

Magnification of Mirror

m=−vu=h′hm = \frac{-v}{u} = \frac{h'}{h}

🔹 2. Refraction of Light
Laws of Refraction (Snell’s Law)

1️⃣ Light bends towards the normal when going from a rarer to a denser medium.
2️⃣ Light bends away from the normal when going from a denser to a rarer medium.
3️⃣ The incident ray, refracted ray, and normal lie in the same plane.
4️⃣ Refractive Index (n)

n=Speed of light in vacuum (c)Speed of light in medium (v)n = \frac{\text{Speed of light in

vacuum (c)}}{\text{Speed of light in medium (v)}}

 Higher refractive index → Denser medium

 Lower refractive index → Rarer medium
Critical Angle & Total Internal Reflection (TIR)

🔹 Total internal reflection occurs when:

 Light moves from denser to rarer medium.

 Angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle.

🔹 Examples:

 Mirage in deserts
 Optical fibers

🔹 3. Lenses & Image Formation

Types of Lenses

1️⃣ Convex Lens (Converging Lens)

 Forms real & inverted images (except when object is close).

 Used in magnifying glasses, cameras, microscopes.

2️⃣ Concave Lens (Diverging Lens)

 Always forms a virtual, upright, and diminished image.

 Used in spectacles for myopia (short-sightedness).

Lens Formula

1f=1v−1u\frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{u}

Magnification of Lens

m=vu=h′hm = \frac{v}{u} = \frac{h'}{h}

🔹 4. Power of a Lens
P=100fP = \frac{100}{f}

 Unit: Diopter (D)

 Convex lens → Positive power
 Concave lens → Negative power
📌 Quick Summary

✅ Concave Mirror → Real & Inverted (except when very close, then virtual & upright).
✅ Convex Mirror → Always Virtual, Upright & Diminished.
✅ Convex Lens → Real & Inverted (except when very close, then virtual & upright).
✅ Concave Lens → Always Virtual, Upright & Diminished.
