concepts: Regardless of the gas exchange system present, the amount of oxygen that can be carried in solution in the
blood is small. The efficiency of gas exchange in animals is enhanced by the presence of respiratory pigments. All
respiratory pigments consist of proteins complexed with iron or copper. They combine reversibly with oxygen and
