The twinkling of stars is due to atmospheric refraction of star-light. The 2
atmosphere is made of several layers whose refractive indices keep on changing
continuously due to sudden change in weather conditions or local air pressure, etc.
Due to this path of light rays from the star either moves towards the normal or
away from the normal continuously. As a consequence, the number of rays
entering, the pupil of the eye goes on changing with time and the stars appear
twinkling.

OR

A second identical prism is placed in an inverted position with respect to the first
prism. This allows all the colours of the white light to pass through the second 1
prism combining to form a white light emerging from the other side of the second
prism.

39 (a) A fuse is a short wire made of an alloy of tin and lead having low melting 1½
point. The thin fuse wire has a higher resistance than the rest of the electric wiring
in a house. So, when the current in a household electric circuit rises too much due
to some reason, then the fuse wire gets heated too much, melts and breaks the
circuit due to which the current stops flowing.

It is installed in the live wire.

(b) Parallel combination is preferred-
1. All the appliances works at the same voltage as that of the supply line. 1
2. If any one of the appliances stops working, then other appliances continue
working as the circuit is not broken.

(c) The metallic case of the appliance is connected with the Earth wire which is 1
connected to a metallic body buried deep inside the earth. Hence the earth wire
ensures that any leakage of current to the metallic case prevents the user from
getting electrical shock.
