Concentration Is The Most Essential Skill
Students who are not paying attention in school and students with short attention spans are prone
to perform poorly in their academics. Lack of concentration is one of the many things people
struggle with in their studies. I am one of those people who faced difficulties with this skill.
During my sophomore year in high school post pandemic, I was not taught how to adjust from
learning remotely to going back in person. I didn't retain any motivation to focus on my classes
because I lacked attentiveness and viewed the classroom environment as discouraging; I was
attending class late most of the time, and I wasn't taking my courses seriously. The day I received
my transcript of the courses I completed during my sophomore year, I took a moment to reflect
on all the hardships I was enduring, trying to find a method to achieve better goals as I wasn't
satisfied with my GPA. As the new school year approached I eliminated all the bad habits I once
had. I started going to bed at 11pm, I initiated taking notes in my class, I started paying attention
to what my teachers were saying, and I completed my homework on time. Ultimately, as the time
passed by I started noticing that all my hardwork was starting to pay off. My grades began to
improve, I reflected on all of my accomplishments, and saw how far I've become. I graduated
with a 86 GPA and I became persistent with whatever I did.

I was in 8th grade when quarantine from the outbreak of covid was enforced. This was my
first time learning remotely. For the first few months, I was attending all my classes, paying
attention and focuses in all of my studies but as more time passed by, i became tired of learning
through a screen. It started with me zoning out during my zoom meetings, then it turned it into
not attending some of my zoom classes and not completing all of my homework. The only
classes I was attending and paying attention to was math due to it being my favorite subject and
social studies as I also found that class interesting; I lost focus in most of my studies and was
slacking. Even though I graduated 8th grade with an 80 GPA, I wasn’t fully dedicated to my
studies.
My experience of my freshman year was similar to my participation in my sophomore year
in high school as I stated previously. During my junior year, I realized that I can’t repeat the
same habits I’ve had the previous years. I knew that I wouldn't be able to go to college because if
I can't focus in highschool completing simple work, how would I be able to concentrate on more
complicated assignments? I knew that I had to find a resolution to help me get on track. I thought
about all the struggles my immigrant parents had to endure to make sure I live a comfortable life
and be successful in life. I used this as motivation whenever I got distracted, lazy, and tired. I
started going to school on time, paying attention in class, asking for guidance whenever needed,
and completing my assignments on time. As months passed by I noticed that doing homework
became easier, I wasn't distracted during class and was concentrated in all of my courses. I
graduated high school and now here I am in college due to me not losing sight of what I wanted
to achieve.
