Blockchain Based Supplychain
Management And Transparency 2024-2025

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The introduction highlights the importance of supply chain management (SCM) in

modern businesses. SCM encompasses all activities needed to produce, distribute, and deliver goods
and services. Traditionally, these systems are centralized and rely on manual processes, which can
lead to inefficiencies, lack of transparency, and a higher risk of fraud. For example, paper-based
record-keeping makes it difficult to track the authenticity of products, leading to challenges like
counterfeiting or quality control issues. Blockchain technology, a decentralized and transparent
ledger system, offers a potential solution to these challenges by providing an immutable record of
transactions. This technology ensures that information shared across the supply chain is accurate,
accessible, and tamper-proof, making it particularly effective in managing cross-border transactions
and multiple stakeholders. In this report, blockchain’s ability to enhance transparency and
traceability is explored, focusing on how it can transform and optimize supply chains, thus building
trust among manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and consumers.

CHAPTER 2

RELATED WORKS

2.1 BLOCKCHAIN-BASED SUPPLY CHAIN IN THE APPAREL INDUSTRY

Tarun Kumar Agrawal et al. explored the implementation of blockchain technology

to improve traceability in the apparel industry. The apparel industry often faces challenges related to
transparency and the authenticity of products. Agrawal proposed a blockchain-based framework that
enhances trust between various stakeholders by providing transparent and secure tracking of goods
throughout the supply chain.

This system allows manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers to verify the authenticity
of materials used, ensure compliance with industry standards, and track the progress of goods from
raw materials to finished products. By recording every step on a decentralized, immutable ledger,
blockchain helps reduce the risk of counterfeiting and enhances sustainability efforts. In the case
study, the authors demonstrated how blockchain could be applied to trace cotton from farms to
textile production, ensuring quality and environmental compliance. The blockchain network ensures
that every transaction is visible to authorized stakeholders, fostering trust and collaboration. This
study concludes that blockchain's decentralized nature not only enhances product traceability but
also promotes sustainability by providing visibility into the ethical sourcing and environmental
impact of production processes.

2.2 BLOCKCHAIN INTEGRATION TO COMBAT FRAUD IN SUPPLY CHAINS

Azzi et al. investigated how blockchain could address fraud and corruption in supply
chain systems, particularly in industries susceptible to counterfeit goods and fraudulent activities.
Their paper, titled The Power of a Blockchain-Based Supply Chain, outlines the challenges of
traditional supply chains, which often rely on centralized databases prone to manipulation. By
integrating blockchain, supply chains become more transparent and secure. Every transaction is
logged in an immutable ledger, ensuring that all products can be traced back to their origin, thus
eliminating opportunities for tampering or counterfeiting. Azzi’s work highlights the use of
blockchain for combatting corruption by enhancing product transparency and security. Their
research showcases how industries like pharmaceuticals and luxury goods can leverage blockchain
to authenticate products and prevent fake items from entering the supply chain. Blockchain also
provides real-time tracking, making it easier to monitor products as they move from one point to
another, thus increasing accountability. The study identifies key challenges, including the need for
scalability and regulatory compliance, but concludes that blockchain offers significant benefits for
industries facing risks from fraud and counterfeiting.

2.3 BLOCKCHAIN-ENABLED COLLABORATIVE SUPPLY CHAIN MODELS

In another study, Agrawal et al. focused on a blockchain-based cooperative model for

enhancing supply chain visibility and resource sharing. The proposed framework addresses privacy
concerns and trust issues that often hinder efficient collaboration between supply chain partners. In
traditional supply chains, data sharing between stakeholders is limited by privacy concerns and the
fear of exposing sensitive business information. Blockchain provides a solution by offering a secure,
decentralized network where information can be shared selectively. Agrawal's study explores how
blockchain can be used to facilitate real-time data sharing between manufacturers, suppliers, and
retailers without compromising security. This collaborative model allows for better inventory
management, faster responses to disruptions, and improved sustainability practices by optimizing
resource use. The blockchain-based system ensures that only authorized participants can view
specific data, making it easier to maintain privacy while still fostering collaboration. The paper
concludes that blockchain can significantly improve the visibility of products and resources
throughout the supply chain, leading to more efficient and sustainable operations.

CHAPTER 3

PROPOSED APPROACH

3.1 SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

The proposed blockchain-based supply chain system consists of a decentralized

ledger where each transaction related to a product is recorded in real-time. The blockchain enables
stakeholders, including manufacturers, distributors, and retailers, to interact in a trustless
environment. Each participant in the system is assigned a unique identity, ensuring the authenticity
of their transactions..

3.2 DISTRIBUTED LEDGER

A distributed ledger records all supply chain activities in an immutable and

transparent manner. Each block in the ledger contains a timestamp, transaction details, and a
cryptographic hash of the previous block. This creates an unbreakable chain of transactions,
ensuring that any attempts at fraud or tampering are easily detectable. In supply chain contexts,
this ledger can track products from origin to delivery, maintaining a full history of product

movement.

3.3 SMART CONTRACTS

Smart contracts are self-executing agreements that automate processes like

procurement, payment, and delivery within the blockchain system. These contracts enforce the
terms agreed upon by the involved parties, reducing the need for intermediaries and improving
efficiency. For example, in the case of a delayed shipment, the smart contract may automatically
penalize the responsible party, ensuring accountability without manual intervention.

3.4 PERMISSION AND CONSENSUS

Permissioned blockchains ensure that only authorized participants can engage with
the network, providing a layer of security and trust. The consensus mechanism, such as Proof of
Stake (PoS), ensures that all transactions are validated by a majority of network participants before
being added to the blockchain. This prevents unauthorized changes and ensures that the ledger

remains secure.

CHAPTER 5

RESULT

The results indicate that blockchain improves transparency, efficiency, and risk
management in supply chains. Case studies show its successful application in tracking products,
optimizing inventory, and preventing fraud. For example, some businesses have integrated
blockchain to verify the provenance of high-value goods, ensuring that their origins and handling
processes are documented and trustworthy. Similarly, the technology has been used to streamline
inventory management, helping distributors and retailers manage stock levels more accurately and
efficiently. However, while blockchain offers numerous benefits, there are also significant
challenges. Scalability is a key concern, as blockchain networks can become slower and less
efficient as they grow. Interoperability, or the ability of different blockchain systems to work
together, is another issue, especially in global supply chains with multiple platforms. Regulatory
compliance remains a challenge as well, as governments work to establish guidelines and policies
for blockchain use. Despite these obstacles, the potential for blockchain to enhance supply chains is
immense, making further research and development crucial.
