(1)Find the values of y in the following

equations:

(a) sin y =cos 37°

We use the cofunction identity:sin 0 = cos (90°-
0). Therefore:

sin y =cos (90°- y) = cos 37°

This implies: 90° -y=37°

Solving fory:y =90° -37° =53°

(b) cos y =sin 285°
We can use the identity cos = sin (90° -0) or
we can find the referenceangle.

285° the fourth quadrant, where cosine is

is in

positive. The reference angle is 360° -285° =

75°. Therefore:

cos y =sin 75°

Using the cofunction identity: sin 75° = cOs (90°
-75)=cos 15°

COS y =COs 15°

Therefore y =15° (ory =360°n + 15°, where
n
is an integer). Since we are looking for a single

value, we take y =
15°.
(2) Find the value of sin 0 and cos e if tan 9 =
4/3

We can isualize a right-angled triangle with

opposite side =4 and adjacent side =3. By the
Pythagorean theorem, the hypotenuse is V(42 +
32) = 5.

Therefore:

sin =opposite/hypotenuse = 4/5cos0 =

adjacent/hypotenuse =3/5
(3)Simplify withouttables or calculator the
following:

(a)(sin 150° - 5cos 300° +7tan 225°)/ (tan

135° +3sin 210°)

First, find the referenceangles and quadrants

for each trigonometricfunction:

• sin 150° = sin (180°- 30)=sin 30° =1/2

(Quadrant II, sin is positive)
cos 300° = cos (360° -60°) = cos 60° =1/2
(Quadrant IV, cos is positive)
• tan 225° = tan (180° +45°) =tan 45° =1
(Quadrant Il, tan is positive)
•tan 135° = tan (180° - 45°) = -tan 45° -1 =
(Quadrant Il, tan is negative)
• +
sin 210° = sin (180° 30°) = -sin 30° = 1/2
(Quadrant lll, sin is negative)

Substitute these values into the expression:

[(1/2) - 5(1/2) +7(1)]/1+3(-1/2)] = (1/2-

5/2+7) / (-1-3/2) = (12/2) /(-5/2) = 6/(-5/2) =
-12/5

(b)sin 60° cos 30° +sin 30° cos 60°

• sin60° =V3/2
• cos 30° = /3/2
• sin 30° =1/2
• cOs 60° = 1/2

Substitute: (V3/2)(V3/2) +(1/2)(1/2) = 3/4 +1/4

(4)Find the values of the following without
tables or calculators, leaving your answer in
surd form:

()
tan 105°

tan 105° =tan (60° +45°) Use the tangent

addition formula:tan(A+B) = (tanA +tanB)/(1 -
tanA tanB)

tan 105° = (tan 60° +tan 45°) / (1- tan 60° tan
45°) = (V3 + 1) /(1 3)= (V3 + 1)/(1 -v3) * (1
-

+ v3)/(1 + v3)=(-2-2v3) / (-2) = 1 +v3

(i) cos 15°

cos 15° =c0s (45°- 30)Use the cosine

subtraction formula: cos(A-B) =cosAcosB +
sinAsinB

cos 15° =cos 45° cos 30° +sin 45° sin 30° =
(v2/2)(V3/2) + (V2/2)(1/2)= (v6 + V2)/4

(iii) cos 345°

cos 345° = cos (360° - 15°) = cos 15° = (V6+

V2) /4
