Key Message

For Educators:

Learning is a constant process. Amidst inevitable circumstances, Department of

Education extends their resources and looks for varied ways to cater your needs and to adapt
to the new system of Education as a fortress of Learning Continuity Plan. One of the probable
solutions is the use of Teacher-made Educational Modules in teaching.

You are reading the Technology and Livelihood Education- Grade 7/8: First
Quarter Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on “Collect farm waste, (TLE_AFAAP C9-
12PFWIIIi-j-IVa-9), Identify and segregate wastes (TLE_AFAAC P9-12PFWIVb-d-10)” as
written and found in the K-12 Most Essential Learning Competencies.

The creation of this module is a combined effort of competent educators from different
levels and various schools of Department of Education-Cebu Province. In addition, this module
is meticulously planned, organized, checked and verified by knowledgeable educators to
assist you in imparting the lessons to the learners while considering the physical, social and
economic restraints in teaching process.

The use of Teacher-made Educational Module aims to surpass the challenges of

teaching in a new normal education set-up. Through this module, the students are given
independent learning activities, which embodies in the Most Essential Learning Competencies
based on the K-12 Curriculum Competencies, to work on in accordance to their capability,
efficiency and time. Thus, helping the learners acquire the prerequisite 21 st Century skills
needed with emphasis on utmost effort in considering the whole well being of the learners.

As the main source of learning, it is your top priority to explain clearly on how to use
this module to the learners. While using this module, learner’s progress and development
should be recorded verbatim to assess their strengths and weaknesses while doing the
activities presented independently in safety of their homes. Moreover, you are anticipated to
persuade learners to comply and to finish the modules on or before the scheduled time.
For the Learners:
As a significant stakeholder of learning, Department of Education researched and
explored on innovative ways to address your needs with high consideration on social,
economic, physical, and emotional aspects of your well-being. To continue the learning
process, DepEd comes up with an Alternative Delivery mode of teaching using Teacher-Made
Educational Modules.
This module is especially crafted for you to grasp the opportunity to continue learning
even at home. Using guided and independent learning activities, rest assured that you will be

WHAT’S NEW

I. Directions: Read and analyze the statements below to check your understanding about
processing farm waste. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is not then
underline the word/s in the sentence that makes it wrong. Use ¼ sheet of paper.

1. Crop waste is an example of a farm waste.

2. Pesticides are safe to transfer in an empty bottle without putting label.
3. It is good to keep and wash the used gloves in removing farm wastes.
4. Always mix hazardous waste materials.
5. Collecting farm wastes can reduce pollution by no longer burning or burying rubbish.
6. Recycling is the process of taking useful discarded items for the next specific use.
7. Landfill is the most common practice of waste disposal that focusses attention on burying
the waste in the land.
8. Manure can also be used as fertilizer.
9. Keep the stock of chemicals and medicines to a maximum amount.
10. Agricultural waste is composed of organic waste such as soiled water, manures, and crop
mushroom compost.

WHAT IS IT

Agricultural Waste is composed of organic wastes (animal excreta in the form of

slurries and farmyard manures, spent mushroom compost, soiled water and silage effluent.
It includes:
- Crop waste (residuals of crops, rice hulls, corn stalks)
- Animal waste (animal manure, Livestock wastes)
- Hazardous waste (chemicals, pesticides insecticides)

Types of Wastes:
1. Organic refers to the residue of plants, animals and microbes or waste materials
naturally generated from all living things
2. Inorganic are chemical substances of mineral origin

Farm Waste refers to any material that is unwanted and unvalued and discarded by its
owner.

Common farm waste materials

- Plastic wrap - animal medicines
- plastic chemical containers - dead livestock
- feed and fertilizer bags - glass
- paper and cardboard - paints
- machinery - household rubbish
- motors - vehicle batteries
- electrical parts - corrugated iron
- fencing - railing

4
Impact of on-farm waste disposal

Burning is the common waste disposal method for both domestic rubbish and farm
rubbish. What you burn, how you burn, and when you burn affects the human health and the
environment as it releases hazardous and toxic substances into the air and leaves as a
concentrated ashy residue.
Burying produces leachate when percolating water and other liquids pick up heavy
metals and decomposing organic wastes and if collected it can contaminate our water and
soil.
Benefits of collecting farm wastes
➢ Reduced costs through processes and purchasing
➢ Reduced pollution by no longer burying or burning rubbish
➢ Environmental benefits- reduced energy consumption, conservation of natural resources,
extension of landfill capacity
➢ Demonstrate social responsibility and environment awareness
➢ Protecting the environment for present and future generations

Farm waste disposal based on OSH Collection Requirements and Plan

There are several major groups of waste management methods and each of them is
being categorized.
Methods of Wastes Disposal
Landfill is the most common practice of waste disposal and focuses attention on
burying the waste in the land.

Incineration/ Combustion is a method in which municipal solid wastes are burned at

high temperatures so as to convert them to into residue and gaseous products.
Recovery is the process of taking useful discarded items for the next specific use.
Recycling is the process of converting waste products into new products.
Waste Legislation and the Environmental Protection
- Sets minimum standards for the location, construction and operations of landfills.
- It defines the different categories of waste that applies to all landfills/ waste disposal
sites for deposit of waste onto or into the land.

Categories of waste
Municipal waste
Hazardous waste
Non- hazardous waste
Inert waste

Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT)

Hazardous waste is produced on farms:

• Chemicals
- used, unused, expired or de-regulated pesticides and biocides such as herbicides,
fungicides and insecticides.
• Medicines
5
- expired, used or partially used doses, dips, wormers, dry cow and mastitis tubes,
needles and syringes.
• Waste paints
- both solvent and chromate-based paints.
• Coolants and anti-freeze
• Brake fluids and brake pads
• Waste engine and hydraulic oil
• Aerosols
• Contaminated gloves, rags, clothes and overall
- used when administering medicines, spraying pesticides, handling oils or any other
hazardous materials
• Grease guns and containers
• Used silicone guns
• All batteries
- including AA batteries, tractor and car lead batteries, remote control batteries etc.
• All used light bulbs
• Any wastes from electrical equipment
- including broken power tools, monitors etc
- anything that is operated by a plug/ battery
• Asbestos and asbestos sheeting
• Creosote
- the remains of burnt wood, tar, coal or other fossil fuels

BEST PRACTICES FOR MANAGING HAZARDOUS FARM WASTE

➢ Never mix hazardous waste materials
➢ Label and contain all hazardous waste
➢ Keep stock of chemicals and medicines to a minimum
➢ Ensure ethical and environmentally responsible disposal of hazardous waste
