Oppenheimer’s Paradox
Engineering Module
Study Guide
By Events, BCLR
Delegates are given an in-depth look at engineering in this subject. In
order to introduce important engineering concepts and fundamentals
through practical experience, students will design, construct, and test
balloon-powered automobiles, a popsicle-stick bridge, and a hydraulic
crane. As they refine their concepts, they will also gain a deeper
understanding of engineering.
Activity 1: Bridge making with Popsicle Sticks
In this activity delegates will build a bridge using the popsicle sticks with the
given materials like popsicle sticks, glue and strings. The goal will be to make a
bridge that is stable and has strength to survive any sort of situation. Through
this the delegates will learn to work as a team with very limited resources.
Activity 2: Balloon Powered Cars
In this activity the delegates will be given a task to design and construct a car
which would totally move with the help of the inflated balloon. The goal of this
task is to build a car which would only move with the support of the inflated
balloon. This task would help the delegates to learn a lot about the different type
of energy and how it is used in daily life.
Activity 3: Hydraulic Crane
In this activity the student will be given a task to design and construct a crane
that would only work with the help of the hydraulics. The goal of this activity
would be to make up a crane that could easily work in any sort of situation. This
task will teach the delegates about the concept of hydraulics .
