MODALS INTRODUCTION
Verbs are of two classes – Main verbs (action
words) and Auxiliary verbs (helping verbs)
Auxiliary verbs are further divided into two kinds
– Primary Auxiliaries and Modals Auxiliaries
Modals are auxiliary verbs which express mood,
tone or attitude of the speaker in saying anything.
They usually come before main verbs.
After modals, Ist form of main verb is used always
i.e. will go, must work, should come etc.
Modals + be + V+ing in active voice i.e. should be
playing, will be dancing etc.
Modals + be + 3rd form of verb in passive voice i.e.
should be played, will be brought etc.
WILL VS SHALL
1. Will with He, She, It, They, You and nouns is used in Simple Future
Tense to express half or more than half possibility. Examples
(i) She will work sincerely now.
(ii) They will win the match.
Shall with I and We is used in Simple Future Tense to express half or
more than half possibility. Ex.
(i) I shall win the competition.
(ii) We shall visit Delhi again.
2. When they are inter-used with opposite pronouns, then they show
DETERMINATION, THREAT, WILLINGNESS, PROMISE, and
DESIRE
(i) I will succeed in the examination. (Determination)
(ii) He shall hurt you. (Threat)
(iii) I will come to meet you. (Willingness)
(iv) You shall return me the book next week. (Promise)
(v) Will I visit your home? (Desire)
USES OF WOULD
1. Indirect Speech
(i) I said I would not come to the party.
(ii) He said that they would clean the house.
2. Habit in past
(i) He would play games for two hours continuously
in his fourteens.
(ii) He would swim across the lake when he was a
young boy.
3. Polite request
(i) Would you lend me your novel, Please?
(ii) Would you look after my child for a while?
4. Impossible wish
(i) Would that I were a millionaire!
(ii) Would that I were the Chief Minister of UP!
SHOULD
1. Moral duty
(i) We should complete our lessons daily.
(ii) We should respect the elders.
2. Advice
(i) You should exercise daily.
(ii) You should always reach school in time.
3. Should after Lest
(i) Read carefully lest you should fail.
(ii) Walk fast lest you should be late.
4. Inference (getting estimates using logic)
(i) He should have passed the NEET.
(ii) They should have made two goals by now.
5. Politeness
(i) Should I drop you by the gate?
