Program to demonstrate the Bubble Chart, Bullet Graph, Box Plot,
Tree Map, Bump Chart, Gantt Chart.
Bubble Chart:
• Simple Bubble Chart
• Bubble Chart with Measure Values
• Bubble Chart with Measure Colors
Simple Bubble Chart (1 or more dimensions, 1 or 2 measures):
• To apply bubble chart, connect to Global -Superstore data.
• Now drag Profit into the Size shelf and drag Ship Mode into the Labels shelf under
Marks card.
• Drag Ship Mode to the Colors shelf under Marks card (or you can simply drag
Profit to columns shelf and Ship Mode to Rows shelf and select packed bubbles
from Show me).
• The following chart appears
Bubble Chart with Measure Values:
• For the above bubble chart, you can also show the values of the measure field which
decides the size of the circles.
• To do this, drag the Sales measure into the Labels shelf (you drag any measure to
label shelf to get the values).
• The following chart appears.
Bubble Chart with Measure Colors:
• For the above bubble chart, you can also use same color with different shades, instead
of coloring each circle with a different color.
• For this, drag Sales into the color shelf. The higher values represent darker shades
while the smaller values represent lighter shades.
Bullet Graph (0 or more dimension and 2 measures):
• To apply bullet graph, connect to Global-Superstore data.
• Now drag Sub Category to columns shelf, Profit and Sales to rows shelf.
• By default, it shows the bar graph. Now click on Show Me and choose the bullet
Graph
Box Plot (0 0r more dimension and 1 or more measures):
• Simple Box Plot
• Box Plot with Two Dimensions
Simple Box Plot:
• To apply box plot, connect to Global- Superstore data.
• Now drag Segment, Region to columns shelf, Discount to rows shelf.
• Click on Show Me and select box plot. You can see the following chart is displayed.
Box Plot with Two Dimensions:
• You can create box plots with two dimensions by adding another dimension to the
Column shelf. In the above chart, add the Category to the Column shelf.
• This produces a chart which shows the box plots for each Category.
Tree Map:
• Simple Tree Map
• Tree Map with Two Dimensions
Simple Tree Map (1 or more dimensions and 1 or 2 measures):
• To apply tree map, connect to Global-Superstore data.
• Now drag Sub-Category to columns shelf and Sales to rows shelf.
• Click on Show Me and select tree map. The following chart displays.
Tree Map with Two Dimensions:
• You can create tree map with two dimensions by adding Region to the above Tree
map chart.
• Drag Region to the Color shelf and again to the Label shelf.
• The chart that appears will show four outer boxes for four Regions and then the
boxes for Sub-Category is nested inside them. All the different regions will now
have different colors.
Bump Chart:
• To apply bump chart, connect to Global-Superstore data.
• Now drag to Order Date, Region to columns shelf and Sales to rows shelf.
• By default, you get bar chart, so change the chart type to line chart (continuous)
from Show Me.
• Right-click on the Sales field, select Quick Table Calculation and then select Rank.
• Now we need to select a field to compute. For this right-click on Sales then select the
option Compute Using and then select Region as our criterion for computing.
• You get the following Bump Chart
Additional information to create more attractive bump charts.
• In the next step, we duplicate Sales (add Sales again to the rows shelf and perform
the same operations as above to the Sales Field). This will give us two separate line
charts as shown in the screenshot below.
• In order to create a bump chart, we need to convert the mark type of the second
(duplicate) line chart of Sales. We change the mark type of this measure from lines to
circles.
• Click on Sum (Sales) (2), then select Circle from the drop-down list of mark types
• Now you can see the second chart will be of circles.
• Next, we click on the Show mark labels from the Labels mark so that the rank
labels appear on the circles of the second chart.
• Now, so far, we have two different charts one showing the data trends by a line and
another showing data points by circles and ranks on them.
• To make a bump chart, we need to merge these two charts together. To do this, right-
click on SUM(Sales) (2nd one, you can see in the picture below) and select the
option Dual Axis from the drop-down list.
• This does two things, first, it merges the two charts into one and second, it adds
one more axis on the right of the chart.
• Finally, the bump chart is done you can see in the screenshot below.
Gantt Charts (1 or more dimension and o to 2 measures):
• To apply Gantt chart, connect to Global-Superstore data.
• Drag the Order Date to columns shelf add Sub-Category to the Rows shelf.
• Now right-click on Order Date in columns shelf and select Exact Date.
• Next, add Order Date to the Filters shelf. Then click Next, and select Range of
dates.
• It is because you want individual date values and there is a very large number of dates
• in the data. The range is created as shown in the following screenshot
• Drag Ship Mode to the Color shelf and Quantity to the Size shelf under the Marks
card. This produces the Gantt chart as shown in the following screenshot.
