End of conservation: Thank you for spending time on chatting with me, I just
decided to travel to your neighborhood in the end of this semester . Hope you
can be my tour guide when I get there. I have to go, see you next time.
ANSWERS:
Location: a town in the South of Vietnam
Easy to access to many local amenitiessuch as:
Medical health care from the hospital.
A grand park and a mall for entertaining
The lower cost for higher living conditions in comparison to other big
cities. (talk about some daily activities/moments)
Give a recommendation about some famous destinations you have to visit.
Have never met any suspiciouscircumstance in my area for a while => proud
of my tranquility town without any serious crimes were recorded.
Local people: hospitality, always willing to give you a hand without knowing
who you are (tell a story about an accident)
I was hungry after a tired-out day at school so that I decided to drop by a local
food stall.
After ate my dish, I realized that I had forgoten my wallet at home. As a
student, I have no credit card.
She surprised me by telling me to just go home and pay it back later although
It was my first time eating here.
Changes:
Although it’s not a hustle and bustle town, there is still traffic jams in
the rush hour.
Lack of green space that the temperature is boiling hot every summer.
(Express how you love your neighborhood).
In general, I decided to return to my town after graduating to spend the rest of
my life there.

QUESTIONS:
Circumstance: 2 friends meet each other a day after a concert in college.
Hi Tien, I met you went to the market with a guy yesterday. Who is he ?
Can you tell me more about him? How about the similarities and differences
between you and your brother?
How about his personality?
It sounds like you often have agruments with him, so after that, what did you do to
end that situation ?
Do you like to be the youngest member in your family?
Would you like sharing with me the advantages and disadvantages of being the
yougest child ?
In your opinion, how to be in good relationship with our sibling ?
What things that siblings often argue about ?
ANSWERS:
Have an older brother whose name was Tri.
In terms of similarities:
Same interests in video games (play them together) (tell a story).
Both of us are the tallest members in family
Both of us are extroverted (but I personally think that I’m more sociable than
him).
Having black short hair.
(Interest) Both love reading comics and watching cartoons, movies. But we
have never gone to the cinema together as he always turns down my invitation.
By contrast, there are the numerous differences:
Appearance: I have wavy hair while he has straight hair.
He is a picky eater (refuse to eat vegetables, fruits, many kinds of meat…) that
he usually complain about my dishes and choose to skip the meal instead of
cooking by himself, whereas I eat almost everything from every countries that
my friends called me ‘a universal consumer’.
As every sibling, we had a lot of conflicts between us about something like opinions,
daily habits, food, money,…
He was so careless for me that always get on my nerves.(example)
We argued most of the time we met.
After every argument, we often stay silent for a while to calm down, then
suddenly talking like we have never argued before.
Being the yougest child is extremely tough for me. For example, my mother always
thinks that my old brother’s stuffs are still in good condition that I have to reuse
them all the time from garments to toys. But we are far different from style that
make me feel uncomfortable and in fact, these clothes are outdated and not always fit
me that make me look like I’m still stuck in the 90s.
After all, I still get along with my brother regardless these disagreements. We have
close bond and love each other. I think this is the miracle of sibling. We can get
angry and stuck in a fight, then suddenly get back like it was never happened.
3. Talk about MUSIC. You may discuss:
- Music genres and preferences
- The benefits and influence of listening to music
- Changes in music preferences over the years.
QUESTIONS:
Circumstance: 2 friends talking about their favourite activity in their free time.
What do you do in your free time?
Me too, I’m crazy about music. How many kinds of music do you know ?
Which one is your favourite ?
Who is your top choice singer ?
Do you know that there are a lot of benefits of listening to music? Can you tell me
some of them?
The music industryand how people listening to music were changed a lot over
years. Can you tell me the differences from the past to now ?
Do you think that we are forgetting the existence of physical products as radio and
cassette now?
ANSWERS:
I keen on listening to music. I can spend almost all of my day on the streaming
application as Spotify. According to the Spotify wrapped, I spent approximately
more than 30.000 minutes on Spotify last year. That’s an extraordinaryfigure
alright?
There are plenty of genres of music, for instance: punk, rock n roll, jazz, blue,
country, alternative, folk, vpop, kpop, jpop….
I used to listen to the numerous kinds of music, but the most impressive was
alternative. It is the combination of many music types as pop, non-mainstream, rock,
blue… It almost has no stereotype. An example for a singer follows alternative
music is Lana Del Rey, one of the greatest artist the world has ever known. (talk
about the first time you heard her songs).
Listening to music has the numerous advantages: (I can talk about it for hours)
Some research found that upbeat songs can help us increasing our heartbeat.
They also distract us from being tired while exercising or working. Scientists
demonstrated that people who listen to the high range music can work more
effectively.
Relaxing us after a tired out day. (example)
Music is also a therapyused in some hospital to make the patients calm down
and cure for their memory loss.
Music also affect your feelings, If you have a bad day, just lie down on your
bed and listen to your favourite songs, you’ll get better soon. Moreover, just
imagine that what would our celebrations be like without music?
We are living in the streaming world where a lot of artists make money by
uploading their music on the online platforms as Apple music, Spotify,
Youtube,…
Sharing our music taste with the others can be a great topic for a conversation.
Music can change the culture significantly. It affect our thinking, behavior, the
way we wear, In fact, for political purpose too. For example, Donald Trump-
the recently resident of America, used a song in order to call for voting him.
The music preferences changed a lot through many years. In the 90s-the age of rock
and roll with the domination of the king of pop: Michael Jackson. Then, in the next
2000s, people tended to like pop and electronic music more as the debut of Britney
Spears-The princess of pop. Currently, Pop music is still the most popular music
type all over the world. This changes regarding the development of how we listening
to music. In the past, we listened by CD and vinyls or cassettes called physical
products. Nowadays, concerning the development of the state-of-the-art online
platforms and electronic devices, we aren’t use them as usual as they used to be, we
use these products for collecting. I also have a collection of Lana del rey vinyl in my
bedroom. I’ll show you when you get there. (radio still the priority for the drivers).
4. Talk about GOING SHOPPING. You may discuss:
- Shopping habits
- Online shopping compared to traditional shopping experiences
- The influence of advertisements on consumer behavior
QUESTIONS:
Circumstance: 2 friends meet each other in a shopping mall.
Hello, what are you doing here?
Do you like shopping ?
How often do you go shopping ?
What things do you often look for here-in a mall?
Which one do you prefer , traditional shopping or online shopping?
Can you tell me why ?
Which one do you think that is safer for customers ?
Many people said that traditional shopping is outdated and will disappear one day,
do you agree with them?
Why do more people choose shopping online over the traditional one ?
Do you think that advertisements have a dramatically impact on consumer
behavior?
Should businesses be responsible for the accuracy of their advertisements ?
What do you think about how we will go shopping in the future ?
ANSWERS:
I’m fond of shopping. My mother was the one who shared this hobby with me.
We often go shopping 3 to 5 times a week. Our favorite places are malls and
markets where we spend money on plenty of things as: food, groceries , clothes,
books, household items, electronic devices …
I personally prefer traditional shopping to online shopping for several reasons:
In comparison, It’s more reliable for me to try and observe something in
real life rather than reading reviews and just look at some pictures.
In addition, my height and weight are quite impressive that not every
garments can fit me that I have to try it in real life. Despite the refunding
policy of some online platforms as tik tok shop, shoppee,... It’s extremely
complicated for sellers to make sure that your requirements are reasonable.
It can take 1 week or more just to send them back to the sellers. (tell a story
how long it take).
The fear of being scammed online is another reason. As the development of
the Internet, there are more traps for both customer and seller. There are
numerous circumstances that the traders who faking the reviews called
seeding that spreading misinformations in order to make their customers
believe in the unreal quality of products. As a person who has trust-issue, I
have never believed in the recommendation of these reviews.
Traditional shopping brings us many things more than just buying, when
you hang out to go to a market, you can feel the hustle and bustle
atmosphere here, you can go sight-seeing, talking to many people (As an
extrovert, I really enjoy that moment).
But look at the bright side, shopping online also has numerous advantages:
There are uncountable vouchers here for many occasions all over a year.
For example: black Friday, tet holiday, Christmas, Midautumn holiday,…
almost every special day you can imagine. ( I used to get a discount that
decreased the price of a keychain from 100.000 VND to 20.000 VND along
with free delivery ).
Shopping online is very flexible that you can buy anything from day to
night, or even at midnight by only a click without leaving your home that
you don’t have to worry about the weather, traffic jams, parking spaces,
crowds, long distance,…
It’s much easier for you to compare the prices of many shops. You don’t
have to get in the shop for asking how much it costs because every price on
the online shop is available and Is it out of stock or not. It means you don’t
even need to say a word to know almost everything about products from
material to colours and size.
Advertisement significantly affected our shopping habits. In this digital era,
products with a good marketing strategy are over those with good quality. The
impacts of advertisements is more than what you are thinking about, It can be the
backbone of a company, especially for big global companies. They are capable of
directly influencing and stimulating how much money the customers will spend
on their products. There were some advertising project changed the global culture.
For instance: Years ago, a cereal company established an advertisement
supposed that breakfast was the most important meal of the day despite the fact
that every meal plays the same role in our daily routine . But because of its
impact, plenty of people still believe in that advertisement even now.
I’m making a prediction that we will have better technologies for shopping in the
next 10 years that allow us to test products online. For example, you will be able
to taste the virtual flavor of dishes before deciding to order them.
5. Talk about ANIMALS. You may discuss:
- The positive and negative effects of raising pets on people’s lives
- The importance of animal welfare and rights
- The protection of endangered species
QUESTIONS:
Circumstance: 2 friends having a conversation after school.
Hi Tien, How’s going ?
I’m going to adopt a dog this weekend but I have no experience, do you have any
advices for me ?
Do you think that pets reflecting their owners personality ?
How to raise an obidient pet ?
Do you agree with the statement that animal welfare and rights are very vital ? and
why?
There are a lot of creatures that are disappearing, what should we do to conserve
them?
Should everyone be responsible for this phenomenon ?
What will happen if we couldn’t stop the disappering of them ?
ANSWERS:
I personally think that raising pets has both pros and cons
Look at the bright side, raising pets can has several advantages:
Pets, especially dogs and cats, provide companionship and emotional
comfort. They can help reduce feelings of loneliness and stress, they also give
you unconditional love.
Caring for a pet can help you cure for some mental illness as anxiety and
depression.
Playing with them not only improves your physical health by walking or
running, but also enhances your mood while playing with them. In some cases,
pets like dogs are used to help the blind called guide dogs.
Raising pets can have some educational advantages. For example: you can
enhance children’s sense of responsibility by letting them take care of pets.
By contrast, there are also some negative effects of raising pet:
Pets require a lot of attention which can be overwhelming, especially for busy
people.
Additionally, Not everyone can be safe with pets. Not only because of being
allergic to their fur but also the risk of being attacked by them. Cause not
everyone knows exactly how to teach their pets. Teaching them requires much
time and patience.
Moreover, pets can be expensive to care for including regular health care,
vaccines, food, grooming and other related costs.
Most of pets can’t live longer than their owners, so if they passed away or get
lost one day. It could hurt their owners a lot.
In my opinion, animal welfare and rights play a crucial role for them to live free from
exploitation and suffering:
Protect them from abuse. Ensuring they are treated humanely for both
physical and emotional well-being.
For example: Many animals are hunted for food, clothing and entertainment in
a large scale. Enacting more equal laws for them like promoting animal-free-
fashion helps reduce harm.
Sadly, this satement has not yet recived the widespread attention it deserves.
So that raising awareness about protecting animal welfare and rights should
be encouraged more and more effectively by campaigns, workshops, talkshow
or educational progess.
My father told me that there are numerous species were disappeared now like
fireflies that used to be everywhere when he was young. I also think that many creatures
will never be seen anymore in the next generation.
This is a global phenomenon, which causes the loss of biodiversity,… affect
the entire ecosystem and human life. Because every species plays a role in
maintaining the balance of ecosystem. For example, predators like tigers and
cheetahs reduce the population of other species. If they are disappeared, there
will be an overpopulation of many species. For instance: because of the lack of
predators, there are too many rabbits and kangaroos in Australia that the
government have no idea to reduce their proliferation.
We could stop this phenomenon by protecting the natural habitat along with
establishing protected areas such as national parks, zoos, wildlife reserves.
Restoring areas that have been damaged by human activities such as
deforestation or population to bring back a suitable environment for
endangered species.
Organizing breeding programs using modern technology to maintain their
bloodline.
Strengthening wildlife protection laws, banning the trading activities of
endangered animal and their products. Correcting the misinformation about the
function of these products. For example, many people still believe that rhino
horns are capable of curing illness which is completely wrong.
Overall, protecting endangered species is protecting our future.
6. Talk about SCIENCE. You may discuss:
- your favourite scientist and his research
- your interests in science and the research you want to do in the future
- your experiment you have done in your life
QUESTIONS:
Circumstance: 2 friends talking about science lesson:
Hi Tien, do you like our new science teacher ?
Yes, I heard that she was a real scientist, not just a teacher.
Sounds like you are keen on science. How do you like it ?
How did you study science when you are major in English language?
Who is your favorite scientist ?
What was his contribution to science ?
If you were a scientist, what would you do ?
Have you ever participated in an experiment ?
Would you mind sharing with me why we study science ?
ANSWERS:
I’m really interested in science. The more I learn about it, the more surprising it is. The
potential to create groundbreaking innovations, the ways it explains everything logically
by providing reliable evidence rather than relying on religion. Despite not being my
major, I usually study science through various sources such as: online platfroms like
youtube, Facebook, or some reliable sources like BBC science…
We generally think that learning science is only meaningful for scientists, but believe it
or not, it affects everything surrounding our lives. Widening our horizon about it can
help us in emergency situations one day. In fact, it’s better for us to follow scientific
breaking news and articles than arguing about random dramas.
One of the greatest scientists in my opinion is Galileo Galilei . He was an Italian
astronomer, physicist and engineer who was imprisoned by the church as he supported
and expanded the Copernicus theory interpreted that the Sun is the center of the solar
system and our planet, Earth, is circling it which was contrary to the church beliefs. He
has his freedom after everyone proved that he’s right.
I have been keen on space, stars, planets, meteorites and the mysteries of universe since
I was a child. So if I have a chance to conduct my own research, I would like to discover
some incredible things not only in our Milkyway galaxy but also in the whole universe. I
would like to work in a team including my friends and some professors to help me. I’m
imagining what will happen if I were the first one who demonstrate that aliens is real
and they are living in the solar system.
I still vividly remember when I was in high school, I was a leader of chemistry team in
my class including 6 members. Our teacher gave us a task that we had to prepare for an
experiment. So that we went to the lab to take some materials and equipment. Then, we
placed a piece of bronze into a glass of water. In the next step, we poured nitric acid
into it. The red-brown piece started turning blue as it melted down. By the end of
experiment, the piece of bronze had completely transformed into a blue liquid. It showed
how this combination reacted. But for me, It felt like the miracle of chemistry.
7. Talk about ADAPTATION. You may discuss:
- How to stay healthy
- How to be safe in a new place
- How to study well at university
QUESTIONS:
Circumstance: 2 friends having a conversation.
Hi tien, long time no see, how’s going ?
I heard that you enrolled in HUFLIT university alright?
OMG how amazing, Did you know that we are going to be classmate in this
semester?
Would you mind sharing to me some experiences you know, like, how to stay
healthy?
How to build a good habit ?
How diet affects our health ?
I heard that you rented a hostel, how to be safe in a new place ?
How about our neighbors ?
How to protect us from losing personal information ?
Can you tell me that what should I do to have a meaningful time here, in HUFLIT ?
Your results were so excellent, what are your secrets to get these grades?
Where can I get more learning opportunities ?
Should I spend a small amount of time on part time occupation to get more money
while learning ?
ANSWERS:
In terms of staying healthy, mantaining a healthy lifestyle is the key. You had better
be disciplined with your daily routine.
For example:
Never stay up too late over midnight, ensuring that you sleep enough. In
addition, studying or exercising at the same time every day not only helps you
work more effectively but also builds a good habit.
Concerning your eating habit, reduce dishes that contain too much calories or
too salty, sweet and spicy which are not good for your both digestive system
and lungs.
Try to cook at home rather than eating out or ordering fast food and soft drinks
which can make you become overweight.
Consuming more nutritious, eco-friendly vegetables and fruits or growing
them at home if it’s possible.
On the other hand, there are various ways to be safe in a new place, especially for
you as a new student in college.
Asking for the security of that area from the local people before deciding to
rent an acommodation.
Ensuring that there is emergency exit.
Being friendly with your neighbors, as the result, you can ask them for help in
some cases.
(Key answer) Be mindful with what you post online, especially your private
information including your working or studying time, exact location and the
appearance of your house or room. You will never know what could others do
with these information. I still vividly remember what happened last year. A
woman was attacked by a stranger since he knew her working time and where
she lived from her instagram. It was really a shocking new that raised our
awareness of protecting personal data.
Change all of your locks when you live in a new room, especially in hostel .
Because your previous renter can have extra keys that you are unaware of. It’s
not uncommon for many cases that the previous renter broke into somene’s
houses for bad intention. None of us wants to have a pervert at home when we
back there alright ?
Furthermore, our goal here is graduating from HUFLIT with a result as expected.
Therefore, I will give you some advices:
If something distracting you from studying, just let it go. It can related to
relationships, video games, social media,… Remember to leave your phone
behind while studying. Because if it’s not out of your sight, you could indulge
in it for a while.
Being responsible to yourself by setting the same reasonable learning time
everyday to build a good habit helping you study more effectively. Starting a
good habit is never too late.
Prioritizing your health first, because you couldn’t learn when you are sick.
Spending a suitable amount of time on learning, especially when there is a
crucial exam. There is a tendency that we often stay up late at night after an
important exam. In my point of view, it’s completely wrong and harmful.
Being aware of what you want to do in the next 4 years after enrolling in this
university. Read what you are going to learn once before the lesson begins and
once more time when it ends. If you are trying to get the scholarship , you will
have to endeavour to do your best.
Don’t turn a blind eye to the chances to study more. They can come from
almost everyone such as : your friends, your professor, your neighbors, your
boss,..
Willing to accept your shortcomings cause everyone has their shortcomings.
But most of them generally couldn’t handle their ego and tend to criticize what
they don’t know rather than acknowledge it. Remembering this fact: what you
don’t know doesn’t mean that they aren’t exist. Your ego can be the biggest
enemy of your learning progress.
8. Talk about HAPPINESS. You may discuss
- The factors making you happy
- The happiest time in your life
- Comparison between the happiness in the past and the one in modern life
QUESTIONS:
Circumstance: 2 friends having a conversation after science lesson (known each
other name already)
Hi Tien, what do you think about our science lesson yesterday ? (You mean the
lesson about human emotions ?)
Which emotion are you most interested in ? (Me too)
Can you tell me what will make you feel happy ?
Would you mind sharing your happinest time you have ever experienced with me?
Some people say that we aren’t as happy as we used to be ? Do you agree with them?
They also say that our generation was too pessimistic that they couldn’t have the real
happiness, what do you think about it ?
Do you have any idea for staying happy in modern life ?
Do you think that social media affect our mood ?
What is the key factor of this changes ?
ANSWERS:
Honestly, being happy is one of my biggest living goals. People will be happy for
numerous reasons, and these reasons are different from each other, It means that
these things can make someone feel happy, but it doesn’t mean they work for
everyone.
As an optimistic person, there are several factors that make me happy.
Situationally, I can be in good mood while laying on my bed and listening to
my favorite songs, in some cases, when I was tired-out, just a short sleep can
help me re-energize myself.
By the way, I can’t deny that I was a greedy one that having as much money as
possible filled me with euphoria. Earning the money that I deserve after a hard
working time is extremely satisfying.
Making others happy is also a great factor. Some research showed that feelings
are capable of spreading from person to person. It means that when you make
others feel happy, you can receive happiness in return.
I’m also joyful when achieving personal goals such as: fluent in new
languages, raising an obedient pet, getting good grades in college...
Currently, I can say that I’m living a life that I expected. But I still vividly remember
the happiest period of my life. It was the first year of my high school, I had too many
friends including both childhood friends and new friends. They always made me
laugh so hard that I couldn’t stop. My results in learning process were better than
now that I engaged in many competitions and got some prizes that my teachers and
parents were really proud of me. (tell a story about this period). In addition, I was
only in high school at that time so I didn’t have to worry about being out of work,
growing up, financial burden, saving money or living independently,…
I think that the happiness in the past was simpler in comparison to now:
Their lives were surrounded by work, nature and family without the Internet
access. Their biggest goals were simple too. Especially in an agricultural
country as Vietnam, my grandma told me that when she was young, everyone
often spent almost their lifetime in the fields working from morning to
afternoon in order to have a bumper crop . They didn’t have a lot of
opportunities to hanging out or traveling. Instead, they tended to participate in
community activities on special occasions as anniversaries and ceremonies that
they organized and ate together in a happy atmosphere.
By contrast, along with the development of technology and the living
conditions, it’s harder for us to find our real happiness because of many
causes:
We are having too many aminities in daily lives helping us do almost
everything. As a result, our demand for happiness is increases. Because the
more we have, the more we want.
The key factor is that we are living in a rat race that people who don’t work
hard enough will be rejected. As a teenager, I can feel the pressure that my
generation has to face. They are often scared of being jobless, peer pressure ,
being mature, growing up, how to be successful, existential crisis . The more
pressure we have, the less happiness we get. Therefore, they chose to forget
their real life for a moment by surfing the Internet to find their temporary
happiness. Although they know that it wouldn’t last long, but having
something is better than having nothing. They all know that immersing
themselves in it is not good, but there are too few options for them in the
modern life that finding for basical living conditions as a stable
accommodation is so challenging that it was a dream of many residents.
Overall, I think that the main reason why we can’t be as happy as people in the
past is the overwhelming pressure of modern life.
9. Talk about JOBS. You may discuss
- Your dream job in the future
- How to find the right job for you
- What steps you should do to get a good job in the future
QUESTIONS:
Circumstance: 2 friends are having a conversation.
Hi Tien, How’s going?
Did you know that we will graduate in the next 3 months? Did you have any plans
for your future yet ?
Which jobs you would like to do in the future ?
Which characteristics would you like to have in an occupation ?
Which one do you prefer ? Teleworking or working in the office ?
Would you mind sharing with me what should we do to get a good job ?
Do you think that it’s getting harder for us to have our dream job ?
ANSWERS:
To be honest, there are a large number of jobs I used to want to do in the future as an
extrovert from teacher, tour guide, customer service, designer... But currently, I have
chosen teaching as my major in college.
In my point of view, being a teacher is a powerful profession that directly affects
the future of many students by inspiring and guiding them. A teacher can play a
significant role in educating and motivating students which helps them grow both
academically and personally regardless of which subjects they teach.
In terms of finding the right job for me, I have some priorities:
I’m keen on both inside and outside job concerning social. It’s better for me to
participate in a team rather than working alone as I’m good at teamwork and I
don’t know why but I love it when there is a crowd around me.
The stereotypical and boring jobs are not for me. I love working in a creative
and stimulating environment. It can be in the large office or in a park with
many people.
If it’s possible, I’m also interested in telecommuting because of several reasons:
I’m living in HCM city, therefore, it’s really a nightmare to go to workplace on
the rush hour. I used to struggle in the traffic jams for 2 hours in the boiling
hot weather. How terrible it was!
Moreover, I can ensure that my devices at home are much more modern and
diverse than any office can provide. Imagining the situation where you wake
up from your bed ,then make a cup of coffee before having breakfast instead of
struggling in the traffic jams and attendant hour. Because teleworking requires
your output over progress, as the result, all of your attention should be paid to
the tasks and deadlines rather than worrying about how to go to work on time.
I personally find this kind of work is far more effective than the traditional
one.
No one can bother you at home. It means you haven’t to act nice with
everyone at your office. Of course, You can avoid the unexpected dramas too.
For me, to have more chances to teach at schools and universities, I have to build a
great personal background.
The first strategy is that I’m trying my best to get good grades and a high GPA
in college. Besides, I also engage in numerous community activities and
competitions in order to have more valuable relationships.
I also spend time on seeking more teaching experiences from various sources:
Volunteer teaching, teaching online with a small class, joining some English
clubs or talkshows about teaching techniques.
Crucially, I’m going to get the higher and higher education, my goal is the
master’s degree or even higher.
We are living in a rat race where your degree is not everything as many people
have got the same one. So that, I also emphasize the attitude and
communication skills. As an optimistic one, I tend to look at the bright side.
Getting along with your colleaguescan be very important for your long-term
work.
(Key) Generally, to have a good occupation, you have to know how to take
your opportunities effectively because your job couldn’t find you.
