CHAPTER 6: RIZAL'S SECOND TRAVEL ABROAD (1888-1891)
A. RIZAL’S REASON FOR LEAVING CALAMBA, LAGUNA
− His presence was putting his family and friends’ safety and happiness in danger.
− He could fight his enemies better and serve his country and countrymen with greater
efficacy by writing in foreign countries.
− After his short stay of 6 months, with a heavy heart, half-sick, and disillusioned, he left
Calamba, Laguna, going to Manila, and from there going to Hong Kong.
B. COUNTRY RIZAL HAD HIS SECOND TRAVEL
HONG KONG
Upon arriving, he was welcomed by Filipino residents, particularly Jose Maria Basa, who
accompanied him going back and forth to Macau and Hong Kong.
MACAU
Stayed for 2 days, describing it as a small, low, and gloomy city in his diary.
HONG KONG
He stayed for almost 2 weeks, studying and observing the lives of Chinese people.
(YOKOHAMA AND TOKYO) JAPAN
He arrived in Yokohama, and the next day he went to Tokyo.
After Tokyo, he went back to Yokohama.
Impressed by the Japanese culture.
He had an overall stay in Japan for one and a half months.
Rizal, with a heavy heart he left Japan to carry on his mission in Europe.
(SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA AND NEW YORK CITY) UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA
Rizal’s impressions about the United States of America were divided into two as positive
and negative.
POSITIVE: Huge opportunities because of its economic standing
NEGATIVE: Rampant racial discrimination
LONDON
He chose this country to improve his knowledge in English and it’s also safe from
Spaniards.
He worked in a British Museum Library on which he successfully annotated Dr. Antonio
De Morga’s book “Sucesos De Las Islas Filipinas” or “Historical Event of the Philippine
Islands,” which became its greatest achievement in London.
He met with a Sanskrit Scholar of that Century, namely Dr. Reinhold Rost who was
impressed by his manners and called him “Una Perla De Hombre” or “Pearl of A Man.”
Rizal becomes leader of Filipinos in Europe.
Rizal discovered that Filipinos in Barcelona planned to establish a patriotic
society called "Asociacion La Solidaridad" or "Solidaridad Association," which was
then inaugurated on December 31, 1888, and aimed to cooperate in the reform
crusade.
Rizal was elected honorary president of the Solidaridad Association, while
Graciano Lopez Jaena founded La Solidaridad, a patriotic biweekly newspaper.
Rizal began writing for La Solidaridad, using pen names like "Dimasalang" and
"Laong Laan."
Some of his notable writings in La Solidaridad were articles (“Los Agricultores
Filipinos” or “The Filipino Farmers”) and (“Letter to the Young Women of
Malolos”), and the pamphlet (“La Vision Del Fray Rodriguez” or “The Vision of
Father Rodriguez”) in response to Father Jose Rodriguez.
(PARIS) FRANCE
He stayed in the house of his friend Valentin Ventura.
Spend most of his time polishing (checking and reading) his historical annotation on Dr.
Morga’s book in the “Bibliothèque Nationale” or “National Library.”

Successfully published annotated editions of Dr. Morga’s book.
Founded different groups like “Kidlat Club” and “Indios Bravos.”
He decided to leave Paris, France, because of the high cost of living and the gay social
life that hampered his writing, especially his 2nd novel, El Filibusterismo.
(BRUSSELS) BELGIUM
Rizal was busy writing and revising his 2nd novel, El Filibusterismo.
Received the bad news from Calamba, Laguna, on having agrarian trouble instigated
by the Dominican Friars (what's worse is, Dominican Order filed a suit in court to
dispossess the Rizal family of their lands in Calamba).
Initially, Rizal planned to return to the Philippines due to family persecution but received
a letter from Paciano revealing that they lost the case against the Dominicans in Manila,
but they appealed it to the Supreme Court in Spain (and because of this, Rizal retained
Del Pilar's legal services and informed him he would be visiting Madrid to supervise the
case's handling).
(MADRID) SPAIN
Upon arriving, a series of misfortunes happened to Rizal, and one of those was when
he failed to get justice for his family.
In addition, a rivalry developed between Rizal and Del Pilar due to the difference
between Del Pilar's editorial policy and Rizal's political beliefs.
(BIARRITZ) FRANCE
Rizal took a vacation and was able to finish writing and revising his 2nd novel, El
Filibusterismo.
(GHENT) BELGIUM
Rizal faced the same problem for publishing his 2nd novel, El Filibusterismo, when he
was trying to publish his 1st novel, Noli Me Tangere, and that is not having enough
funds to support the printing.
Given the problem, instead of going back to Brussels, Belgium, he then chose Ghent,
Belgium, as the cost of printing in this country is way cheaper, but still, it didn't solve
his problem.
From the given situation, suddenly someone from Paris, France, provided him financial
aid, which was his friend Valentin Ventura, who learned about his problem and
immediately sent him the necessary funds.
On September 18, 1891, El Filibusterismo came off the press.
(MARCEILLE) FRANCE
Rizal boarded a steamer going to Hong Kong.
HONGKONG
Upon Rizal’s arrival, he was welcomed again by Jose Maria Basa.
From here, he wrote to his parents asking their permission to go home (on the same
day that he received a letter from his brother-in-law, Manuel Hidalgo, informing him
about sad news concerning their family).
His father, brother, and brother-in-law, followed by his mother and sisters Lucia, Josefa,
and Trinidad, were deported from the Philippines and followed Rizal in Hong Kong.
Heartbroken at first, but still it was a family reunion wherein they got to spend the
happiest Christmas of the year 1891.
The following year, which is 1892, Rizal began earning a living in Hong Kong by
practicing medicine.
He was able to write some notable works in Hong Kong, but what became most
important was his “Constitution of La Liga Filipina,” which was also printed and
published in Hong Kong of the same year.
