CHAPTER 5: RIZAL'S FIRST HOMECOMING
A. RIZAL'S REASON FOR COMING BACK TO THE PHILIPPINES
1) To perform a surgery on his mother’s eyes.
2) To serve Filipino people oppressed by Spaniards.
3) To personally see the effect of his writing, particularly Noli Me Tangere, on Filipino people
and their oppressors, Spaniards.
4) To find out why Leonor Rivera remained silent. (Unsuccessful)
B. RIZAL’S DELIGHTFUL TRIP COMING BACK TO THE PHILIPPINES
− Rizal left Rome, Italy, via train going to Marseille, France.
− Boarded the French steamer Djemnah going to the Philippines.
− With Paciano’s aide, he’s able to safely come back home to Calamba, Laguna
− Established his clinic, with his mother as his first patient; soon after, patients inside and
outside Calamba, Laguna, flocked to his clinic.
− He was called “Dr. Uliman,” since he came from Germany.
− He was asked for an appearance in Malacañang by Governor General Emilio Terrero for
some questioning about his novel Noli Me Tangere.
− He successfully explained his side that he merely exposed the truth, but he did not
advocate subversive ideas.
− Still concerned about Rizal’s safety, particularly from the Friars, Governor General Emilio
Terrero assigned young Spanish Lieutenant Don Jose Taviel de Andrade as Rizal’s personal
bodyguard.
C. THE ATTACKERS OF NOLI ME TANGERE
- Noli’s controversy turned into a hateful verbal fight, with Father Jose Rodriguez selling
pamphlets in churches that Filipinos were forced to purchase to appease the friars and
Father Font criticizing the book.
D. THE DEFENDERS OF NOLI ME TANGERE
- Filipino reformists rush to uphold the truth of the novel as its defenders, such as Marcelo
H. del Pilar, Graciano Lopez Jaena, Mariano Ponce, Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor, and others.
E. WHAT SPOLIED RIZAL’S HAPPY DAYS IN CALAMBA, LAGUNA?
− The death of his older sister, Olympia.
− Groundless tales circulated by his enemies that he was a German spy, etc.
− As he faced anonymous threats, his parents, relatives, and friends advised him to leave the
Philippines, fearing his life was in danger.
