Biochar Production from Watermelon Peels

This research investigates the production of biochar from agricultural waste, specifically watermelon peels and bael shells, highlighting its sustainability and high super capacitance performance. The study examines the effects of carbonization temperature and time on biochar yield and iodine adsorption capacity, finding optimal conditions at 300°C for 30 minutes. Results indicate that watermelon peel biochar has superior properties compared to bael shell, suggesting agricultural waste as a valuable resource for high-quality biochar production.

ABSTRACT

Biochar is a light and highly porous carbonaceous material derived from thermochemical
decomposition of biomass. Biochar made from agricultural waste is gaining more attention in
energy field due to its sustainability, low cost, apart from having high super capacitance
performance. In the present research work, watermelon peel and bael shell have been considered
for the production of biochar as these are one of the most unwanted by-products generated by
food industries, fruit juice producers and all over the society. A great quantity of these waste is
got rid of indiscriminately into the environment thereby causing pollution one way or the other.
In this study, watermelon peels and bael shells have been carbonized at different temperatures
between (200-400oC) for 15, 30, 45 and 60 mins and the influences of these parameters on the
responses, i.e., yield% and iodine no. of biochar were investigated. The adsorption capacity of
the biochars was determined by iodine test. The results obtained indicated that the carbon yield
and iodine adsorption value of biochar produced from watermelon peel approached 40.53% and
714.3 mg/g under the optimal conditions of carbonization time (30 min), and temperature (300
o
C) indicating well-developed porous structure compared to bael shell. Important
physicochemical properties of optimized biochar were further confirmed by FESEM-EDX, and
XRD Analysis. It has been discovered that local agricultural wastes like watermelon peels should
always be considered worthwhile raw materials for the production of high quality materials one
of which is biochar that is very useful industrially.
