REPORT ON THE TEACHING PRACTICE AT BEDAASE D/A BASIC SCHOOL BY OWOAHENE ACHEAMPONG
SAMUEL
During my six-week observation period at Bedaase D/A Basic school, I had the
opportunity to immerse myself in the classroom environment of Bedaase D/A Basic
school and witness the teaching practices firsthand. This essay highlights my
personal experiences and observations throughout weeks, while also discussing my
first impression of the STS school, shedding light on the diverse teaching
strategies, student interactions, valuable lessons learned, the induction process,
and the impact it had on my professional development.
On the 5th October,2023 that was on Thursday. It was the first day for my S.T.S
practice and I went to the school exactly 7:30am and the learners were in class
observing their silent hour. I walked to the office of the headmistress and
introduce myself to her and the main reason why I was there.
She(headmistress)then begun to take me through the history of the school and later
took me around the school environment where she showed me their facilities
including the toilets, playing field, and PTA respectively.
She then told me the student enrollment both female and male. After this, I went to
my class to observed to meet my mentor to assist me with the activities for the
day. He enlightened me on the curriculum materials and how they are used. Examples
of the materials are teaching syllabus, scheme of work, and teachers
The second week of visit was on 11th October, 2023. My mentor uses curriculum
materials such as lesson notes, pupils register, attendance book, and a log book.
My mentor help students to acquire knowledge at the end of every lesson and also
uses indicators to measure the contributions necessary to enable the program to be
implemented.
Observation of classroom lesson, presentation, management and assessment
On the third week, which was on the 16th of October,2023, my mentor introduced
chi’s lesson by asking the pupils questions based on the previous lesson taught and
cracked jokes to solicit convenience atmosphere. He also asked the students to
brainstorm answers to questions she asked.
During her lesson presentation, a lizard dropped from the ceiling which distracted
the class and put fear in the learners. My mentor managed and gave access to every
learner to gain equal opportunity to learn. The sitting arrangements in class was
based on row and columns with learners sitting with opposite sex. No critical
incident during and after the presentation.
Observation of Traits of Teachers Professionalism
In observing the professional traits of my mentor, I noticed the following
competence, specialized knowledge, good self- regulation, and time management.
Also, I noticed that, he tolerates the views of others during discussion and also
has a good spirit of teamwork. I learnt that one need teamwork to be successful and
tolerate the views of others.
Undertaking child study, focusing on children’s learning and progress
On the fourth week which was on the 23rd of October ,2023, our main objective was
to undertake the child’s study focusing on children’s learning progress on that
day, my used communication skills which helped the students to listen and
understand the point of views of teachers in class and enabled them to ask
questions with confidence and also he used problem solving skills to help them
identify a problem, brainstorming test appropriate solutions and analyze results
which broaden their understanding.
My mentor also used summarization of topics treated after every lesson and engaged
them by asking questions about the topic treated orally.
Discussion of teaching philosophy and building portfolio
On the sixth week which was on the 10th of November,2023 was our last day of visit
to the school. This time around I was to discuss our beliefs of teaching and
learning. I went to my mentor to tell me his beliefs and values of teaching and
learning which he told me that every learner is unique and born with something so
his role is to serve as a good role model for them in order to achieve their goals.
Listening to the conversation, I learned that teaching is
an act that requires much effort, patience, and knowledge to be able to transmit
culture.
Teaching philosophy
I discovered my philosophy that passion, love, adequate or ample teacher
preparedness, and proper use of teaching and learning materials will help to open
the learners understanding to develop their careers through effective teaching and
learning process. Also, my responsibility to plan, prepare and deliver lessons to
meet the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of the pupil. It is my
reasonable service to put fort 100% of my efforts towards providing children of all
ages, grades level and cultural groups with an effective, quality, and fun learning
experience, so they too may enjoy the process of teaching and learning regardless
of subject or content.
During my teaching practice, I encountered some challenges and some of these
challenges are listed below
Language barrier: sometimes during teaching and learning some students with less
understanding need L1 for further explanation but because I wasn’t familiar with
their language, so I always delegate one of the students to translate whatever I
have taught to their local language to benefit such students but I realized still
they don’t get satisfied with their colleague`s explanation.
High enrollment: The school has large number in classes which they need to divide
it to ensure classroom management and effective teaching and learning because
sometimes is very difficult to control large number of students in the class.
Lack of furniture: some students in the class don’t have chair and table to sit
during lessons time, sometimes some students have to stand throughout the lesson
After thorough investigation, beneath are some recommendations and suggestion the
school should take into consideration;
