Interstellar
Instructions
Interstellar is a science fiction/thriller, that focuses on a dystopian reality where Earth
becomes inhabitable. There, a group of scientists venture to find another habitable
planet to live on. Directed by Christopher Nolan, it discusses the extent of human
exploration and consequence of survival.
Sci-Fi Codes and Convention
The futuristic concept of Interstellar is the possibility of scientists going through
blackholes and discovering life on alien planets, taking years for the spaceship to land
on the fictional black hole (Gargunta). The scientific concept is time dilation, where
time moves slower in higher gravitational planes. Intestellar uses highly advanced
technology to travel light years from earth, the idea of travelling through multiple
universes or planets to inhabit life and themes of betrayal and survival are heavy
conventions of Sci-Fi.
Visual aspects of Interstellar, have warmer colours and soft, mystical music towards
the start, implying the excitement of discovering this new planet. But, as Dr Mann is
introduced, the scenes shifted towards a cooler setting, the music became harder, and
slower. . This forsehadows his betrayal and thwarting Cooper’s plans.
Comparison And Evolution
2001: A space Odyssey, with the supernatural element of finding /life in this alien planet.
Although 2001, deals with the idea of humans evolving futher and Instellar is discovering
life and travelling through the universe, Interstellar consistently infleunced by 2001 with
spaceships and discovery of an unknown planet.
Before, older sci-fi films use props and create structures for one scene. Interstellar brings
a captivating new VFX into sci-fi genre, being one of the first sci-fi films to constantly use
computer designs to create this mysterious place. Interstellar warps/challenges the
convention of sci-fi films just sticking to fictional story. Instead, weaving scientific
theories with fictional possbilities.
Legacy
This worked because, Instellar came around the time of development in space and
new dsicoveries were made. This paved way for newer films to utilse and boldly use
abtract themes to shape their stories.
