RTD Calibration Work Instruction

This document outlines the work instruction for verifying Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) using a calibration procedure involving a multimeter and dry block calibrator. It details the steps for testing the RTD's performance against Class C Alpha standards, including setting up equipment, measuring resistance at various temperatures, and evaluating results. The work instruction is to be reviewed every two years, with the next review scheduled for November 2026.

Work Instruction for RTD Element Verification

W.I. Reference No. : Issue No. 1
Calibration Procedure: 5 point Issued Date: November 29, 2024
Page 1 of 2

1. Summary
RTD stands for “Resistance Temperature Detector” and it is a sensor whose resistance changes when
its temperature changes and it is used to measure temperature. However, regardless of its application
we must that this instrument measure temperature that is within Class C Alpha = 0.00385. This could
only be done by testing it with the help of multimeter and dry block calibrator.

3.
Detailed Working Instruction
1. Determine and review tolerance or limit required (Class C Alpha = 0.00385), no calibration
process on the RTD element.
2. Prepare and set-up the dry block calibrator, multimeter and the RTD element to be tested or
verified.
3. Prepare “As Found Data Table” with a 5-point scale (35 to 100 degrees) to start the verification
of the RTD Element’s performance.
4. Set the temperature of the dry block to 35 degrees then put the RTD element inside the dry
block while waiting the dry block to reach the said temperature. After reaching the temperature,
we may now check the resistance reading with the use of multimeter. This process will be
continuing until the 100 degrees checking.
5. The resistance reading will be check based on the Class C Alpha table to determine its
corresponding temperature.
6. Evaluate “As Found Data Table” and determine the type and magnitude of error.
7. Compare the calculated error with the limit given under the Class C Alpha = 0.00385, if the
error is not within the given tolerance then it is recommended for an equipment replacement
since this instrument cannot be calibrated.
8. Disassemble the set-up and prepare the UUT for documentation verification of its performance.
9. Do housekeeping.

4. Review Frequency
 This work instruction shall be reviewed at least every two (2) years or as necessary.
 Next review date is on November 2026.
