What is Ethics?
Ethics explain the basic principles that influence how individuals behave and frame their
perceptions towards particular situations. It is the practical science of human conduct.
Therefore, it is a practical science because of its philosophical approach in providing
knowledge that guides individuals' everyday lives.
Human Acts and Acts of Man (difference between the two)
Human Acts:
What are they? These are actions that you do with full knowledge and free will. You understand
what you're doing, and you choose to do it. You know the rules, and you freely decide to obey
them. Voluntary.
Examples:
Studying for an exam (you choose to put in the effort)
Deciding to help a friend (you freely offer your assistance)
Choosing to eat healthy food (you make a conscious decision)
Acts of Man:
What are they? These are things your body does without you really thinking about them. They're
not under your direct control.
Examples:
Your heart beats. You don't consciously make it beat. It just happens.
Breathing, Sleeping, Blinking, Reflex actions.
~ Key Differences between Human Acts and Acts of Man ~
Control: We have full control over human acts. While we have little to no control over acts of
man.
Responsibility: We are morally responsible for our human acts. We are not morally responsible
for acts of man.
In Simple Terms:
Human Acts: Things you DO on purpose.
Acts of Man: Things your body DOES without you thinking about it.
Basic elements of human acts: deliberate, freedom, voluntarily - you committed the action
Major determinants: morality of human acts or the act itself (indifferent act, objectively
good act), motive (intention or motivation) – if it is wrong or bad motivation, circumstances.
4 types considered: what, where when, to whom.
Modifiers of human acts:
1. Ignorance: Visible: can be prevented/negligence (less accountability) and invisible (no
possible means/can’t be prevented or involuntary, not morally responsible.)
2. Passion (concupiscence): are either tendencies away, from under undesirable or harmful
things. Positive emotions, the former include love, desire, delight, hope and bravery
Negative emotions, the latter include hatred, horror, sadness, despair, fear and anger.
3. Fear: disturbance of the mind.
4. Violence: any physical force (fallacy)
5. Habit: repetition of actions. Voluntary (constantly repeated)
