Intermediate Induction Task
1. You are designing a solid rocket motor. What are the basic components of a solid
rocket motor, and how does each component contribute to its operation? What
propellent will you be using? What are the different types of grain geometries and
how does it affect their thrust curves and which one would you choose for your
design and why? How does the choice of propellant composition affect the burn
rate, chamber pressure, and thrust performance? Discuss the role of the nozzle in
achieving efficient thrust, and how its geometry impacts exhaust velocity and
pressure balance. With the parameters you chosen simulate your rocket motor with
the free software OpenMotor
2. A 100 kg dry mass spacecraft has a thruster with 2000 s specific impulse and 30
mN thrust. What propellant mass is required to achieve 400 m/s of delta-v? How
long will the maneuver take? Why?
3. A small rocket-powered lander has a total initial mass of 500 kg (including
propellant) and is equipped with a thruster that provides a specific impulse of 250
seconds and a maximum thrust of 500 N. The lander needs to perform a descent
maneuver, slowing down from an initial velocity of 250 m/s to a final velocity of 0
m/s. What is the propellant mass required to complete the maneuver? How long
will the engine need to fire to accomplish this maneuver? Discuss the physical
reasoning behind your results
4. Using Onshape or any CAD software of your choice to design the following solid
rocket motor bulkhead
