In the passage, the author develops the conflict between Mr. Pickle and Godfrey
Gauntlet. Through the use of irony and intense narrative pace, the author
illustrates the two characters affect each other’s emotion and struggle with their
emotions, social norms and class issues, through the use of dialogue, and symbols
of masculinity. The back-and-forth of the dialogue conveys the irony that Mr.
Pickle and Mr. Gauntlets are in an argument but trying best conforming themselves
to the respect of social propriety, therefore creating a sarcastic tone that also
criticizes the social norms of a sense of inferiority based on class differences
which result in exceeding politeness.
The first paragraph of the passage explains the confrontation of Godfrey Gauntlet
with Mr. Pickle. The dialogue begins politely but quickly becomes tense. The
tension, however, is ironically interspersed with socially polite phrases, such as
the repetition of “Sir”, as well as the use of fancy speech. This creates a
humorous tone as the men attempt to retain their social dignity while their
emotions and anger are not withheld from each other. Even so, towards the end of
the dialogue the men both give into their anger and forsake their polite speech,
neither wishing to give in to the other. Eventually, with their emotions out of
control, the men decide to settle their dispute in a sword fight.

The second paragraph describes the events of the fight and the conclusion of the
whole matter. This paragraph reveals the men have forgotten their manners and have
digressed into calling each other names and letting their emotions take over his
dignity. The use of details revealed the ugliness of uncontrolled emotions and made
a strong contrast with the first paragraph in which they started the conversation
with fake politeness. Thereby sarcastic the vanity within human nature. The author
describes the rest of the fight with much imagery, and a quick, intense sentence
flow to add suspense. The fight ends in a broken sword and no true winner, which is
a rather anticlimactic end to the whole conflict. Which the author used to show how
arguing with one’s emotions does not produce much good.
The dialogue uses irony to portray the character’s emotions along with their
unsuccessful attempts at politeness and social dignity. As the characters let their
emotions overcome them, their anger takes over and they proceed to fight it out
with swords. The passage ends with no problems being solved, representing the fact
that it is better to work things out with a calm mind than to let one’s emotions
control their actions.
