A LUCKY ESCAPE
My friends and I were going on a camping trip in Potosi, when we almost had a terrible accident. It was late at night
and it was raining heavily. Suddenly, a lightning struck and hit a tree, which fell down in the middle of the road. My
friend, who was driving, tried to stop the car, but the road was very slippery and the car started sliding. We hit the
tree hard. While I was waking up from the shock, I heard my friends shouting “is everyone all right?” We all answered
“yes!”. Some minutes later, the fire truck arrived and helped us get out the car, which was completely destroyed. We
were so lucky to be alive!

Customs of our region
Bolivia has many customs around the country. When we travel
visiting some places we have to see those customs. For example:
in La Paz, one important custom people have is the Apthapi, where
you have to eat a lot. There are also traditional parties for saints
in the cities and the countryside. In Santa Cruz there is a special
day for celebrating its customs, it is called the Tradicion Cruceña’s
day which is celebrated in September. Talking about Cochabamba I
think the custom is their food, they have delicious food for example
the Pique Macho, Chicharron and other dishes. You have to taste
all those delicious dishes. In Tarija the customs are the San Roque
party and the Comadres day in the carnival. We don’t have to miss
Oruro’s carnival, there we can see many dances and one of the

most important dances there, is Diablada.

Affirmative obligation sentences follow the structure: Subject + 'have to' + Verb ('I have to play volleyball'). Negative sentences incorporate 'do not' or 'does not' before 'have to' (e.g., 'I don't have to eat hamburgers'), while interrogative sentences reorganize the auxiliary to the start: 'Do you have to play?' for yes/no questions or add question words for information (e.g., 'What do you have to do?').
The past continuous tense is effective for describing actions that were ongoing at a specific point in the past, often providing background for another action. It can also depict two actions happening simultaneously or an ongoing action interrupted by another action. For example, 'He was riding his bike at 10 a.m.' describes an action in progress, and 'They were leaving when the phone rang' shows an interrupted action .
In past tense, affirmative sentences use the verb 'to be' directly with the subject ('He was born in 1998'). Negative sentences incorporate 'not' with contractions where applicable ('She wasn't a nurse'). Interrogative sentences invert the subject and verb ('Was he born in 1998?'), using structure to determine sentence type and deliver questions, statements, or negations effectively .
Question words and past time expressions are crucial for crafting informative sentences by specifying the information sought (who, what, when, where, why) and the time frame involved. They provide clarity and specificity, facilitating detailed responses. For example, 'When were you born?' combines temporal specificity with inquiry for precise data .
The prepositions 'in,' 'on,' and 'at' serve to organize time expressions by specificity: 'in' is used for longer periods (months, years, centuries), 'on' for specific days and dates, and 'at' for precise times or moments. For example, 'in January,' 'on Monday,' and 'at noon' respectively denote increasing specificity in time referencing .
Using the past form of 'to be' when writing biographies helps accurately situate historical figures like Pedro Domingo Murillo or Juana Azurduy de Padilla in their appropriate contexts, detailing roles or states of being within historical timelines. It establishes relationships and changes over time, crucial for understanding and analyzing their contributions and narratives .
Using 'have to' to express obligations emphasizes an external requirement or duty rather than a personal choice, aligning closely with necessity but often indicating a stronger, compulsory action. For example, 'I have to read books' suggests an external obligation rather than personal desire. It's essential for grammar and communication to distinguish obligation ('have to') from personal necessity or preference .
Cultural understanding in language learning enriches the learner's perspective, connecting linguistic structures to social practices. Recognizing activities like Apthapi in La Paz deepens contextual comprehension, offering insights into customs and fostering better communication. It enables learners to interact meaningfully and respectfully within diverse cultural settings, enhancing both cognitive and empathetic skills .
In English, contractions of the past tense auxiliary verbs are formed by combining the auxiliary verb with 'not.' For 'was,' the contraction is 'wasn't,' and for 'were,' the contraction is 'weren't.' These contractions are used to form negative sentences. For example, 'was not' becomes 'wasn't' and 'were not' becomes 'weren't' .
Transitioning sentences from affirmative to negative in the past continuous tense requires identification of the auxiliary verb 'was/were,' insertion of 'not' to shift meaning, and application of appropriate contractions for fluency ('was not' to 'wasn't'). This process involves analysis and synthesis of grammar rules to accurately maintain tense while altering sentence polarity, critical for comprehensive language usage .
