Sisters at St. Theresa’s College, Ibadan, initiated career guidance for final-year students. This
initiative led to the formation of the Ibadan Careers Council in 1962 and later the Nigerian
Careers Council in 1967.

In 1961, Dr. C.I. Berepiki became the first vocational guidance officer in Nigeria. The field
expanded significantly in 1976 with the establishment of the Counselling Association of
Nigeria (CASSON). Today, numerous universities and colleges train professional counselors,
and government policies emphasize the inclusion of guidance services in schools.
