Interpretation
1. What is Stated in the Story
a. Commentary of the Author:
V 1:1 – "In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land."
V 1:3 – "Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons."
V 1:5 – "Both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her
husband."
V 1:6 – "When Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by
providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there."
V 1:22 – "So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite, her daughter-in-
law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning."
V2:1 – "Now Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, a man of standing from the clan of
Elimelek, whose name was Boaz."
V2:3 – "As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of
Elimelek."
V2:20 – "The Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. 'He has not stopped showing
his kindness to the living and the dead.' She added, 'That man is our close relative; he is one of
our guardian-redeemers.'"
V2:23 – "So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat
harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law."
V 3:1 – "One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, 'My daughter, I must find a home for
you, where you will be well provided for.'"
V3:7 – "When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went over to lie
down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet and lay
down."
V3:18 – "Then Naomi said, 'Wait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. For the man
will not rest until the matter is settled today.'"
V 4:1 – "Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian-
redeemer he had mentioned came along."
V4:9-10 – "Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, 'Today you are witnesses that
I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. I have also acquired
Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with
his property.'"
V4:13 – "So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord
enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son."
V4:17 – "The women living there said, 'Naomi has a son!' And they named him Obed. He was
the father of Jesse, the father of David."
Character:
-Naomi
V 1:8-9 – "Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May the Lord deal kindly with you...
The Lord grant that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband."
V1:11-13 – "Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb
that they may become your husbands?"
V1:20-21 – "Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with
me. I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty."
-Ruth
V1:16-17 – "Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will
go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God."
V 2:7 – "Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves after the reapers."
V2:10 – "Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a
foreigner?"
V 3:9 – "I am Ruth, your servant. Spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer."
-Boaz
V 2:8-9 – "Now, listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but
keep close to my young women... I have charged the young men not to touch you."
V2:11-12 – "All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has
been fully told to me... The Lord repay you for what you have done."
V3:10 – "May you be blessed by the Lord, my daughter. You have made this last kindness greater
than the first."
V 4:9-10 – "You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that
belonged to Elimelech... Also Ruth the Moabite... I have bought to be my wife."
-Orpah
V 1:10 – "No, we will return with you to your people."
Main Point of a Dialogue:
A key dialogue occurs between Ruth and Naomi, where Ruth pledges her unwavering loyalty in
Ruth 1:16-17, stating, “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be
my people and your God my God.” This dialogue highlights Ruth’s faithfulness and sets the
foundation for the blessings and redemption that follow.
Repetition of Words:
-Words like “redeem” and “kindness” recur throughout the book, emphasizing the themes of
loyalty and redemption. For instance, the term “redeemer” is repeated in Ruth 4, drawing
attention to Boaz’s role. Additionally, the Hebrew word “shub” (“return”) is used to convey both
the physical return to Bethlehem and a symbolic journey of faith, as seen in Naomi’s decision to
return and Ruth’s choice to follow.
Proportion:
-The narrative allocates significant portions to Naomi’s despair and Ruth’s decision to
accompany her (v1:1-5, 16-17), as well as to Ruth’s interactions with Boaz in the fields (v2-3).
The final chapter (chapter 4) is dedicated to Boaz’s act of redemption, highlighting its
importance for Naomi’s and Ruth’s futures, and emphasizing the community’s response to this
act of kindness and restoration.
Story’s Central Conflict:
-The central conflict revolves around Naomi’s and Ruth’s vulnerability as widows, which places
them in a precarious position without social or economic support. The story explores whether
they can find security and restoration within Bethlehem’s community, despite their vulnerable
status (Ruth 1:3-5).
Resolution of the Story’s Central Conflict:
-This conflict is resolved when Boaz steps forward as a kinsman-redeemer, marrying Ruth and
ensuring that the family line continues (Ruth 4:9-10, 4:13-17). His actions not only secure Ruth
and Naomi’s futures but also bring Naomi joy as her family’s legacy is preserved, symbolized by
the birth of Obed.
Story’s Message:
-The Book of Ruth underscores the value of loyalty and kindness, showing how these virtues
lead to blessings and transformation. Ruth’s loyalty to Naomi and Boaz’s integrity reflect how
God works through faithful individuals. The story reveals that God’s providence is not limited to
Israel alone, as Ruth, a Moabite, is included in His plans and becomes part of the lineage of King
David (Ruth 4:17).
Main Idea:
-The main idea of the Book of Ruth is that God’s provision often works quietly through faithful,
selfless actions. Ruth’s journey from a foreign widow to an ancestor of David shows how loyalty
and kindness can lead to redemption and blessing. The story illustrates that God’s love and
purpose include all who seek Him, regardless of background, ultimately weaving their lives into
His larger plan.
