What is BIM?
• BIM is a rich digital model of a physical structure, including building shape,
design, construction time, costs and physical performance etc.

• BIM stands for "Building Information Modeling" or a "Building Information

Model".

• BIM is an Integrated Project Model.

• BIM is a Technology which includes process of construction

Engineering Design Stages with BIM

• LOD: 100 Conceptual Geometry - Schematic Design

• LOD: 200 Approximate Geometry - Basic Design

• LOD: 300 Precise Geometry - Detailed Design (Bidding Model)

• LOD: 400 Fabrication - Construction Documents

• LOD: 500 - As-Built - As-Built

HVAC NOTES:
BRITISH THERMAL UNIT

A BTU is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound (0.454 kg) of
liquid water by

1 °F (0.56 °C) at a constant pressure of one atmosphere.

TON of Refrigeration:

Taiba Engineering Consultants (TEC MEP Institute) Page 15

When 1 lb of ice melts, it absorbs 144 Btu. Therefore, when 1 ton (2000 lb) of ice melts, it
absorbs 288,000 Btu (2000 x 144). Consequently, 1 ton of refrigeration absorbs 288,000 Btu
within a 24-hour period or 12,000 Btu/hr (288,000/24).

So, 1 ton of refrigeration is defined as the transfer of heat at the rate of 12,000 Btu/hr
[3.517 kW].

DUCT

A Duct is a device used to produce an isolation to carry an item form one place to other
place without bringing the product in contact in contact with the atmosphere before the
delivery of duct.

Shapes of Duct

Round, Flat Oval, Rectangular, Flexible Duct, Square Duct, Spiral Duct.

Duct System

Supply Air Duct, Return Air Duct, Fresh Air Duct, Return Air Duct

Duct Design Method

Equal Friction method, Static Regain method & Velocity Reduction Method
