1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Welcome

Welcome to the wonderful world of computers! The aim of the End-User Computing course
is to allow you, the learner to familiarise yourself with the concepts of computer technology
to use computers effectively. All topics in this course are geared towards the user, providing
what you need to know about computers to prepare yourself for a successful career.
The study of the subject End-User Computing must be used to enhance all your other subjects.
It is an entry level subject, and you must extract from the course what you need to develop
further. End User Computing (EUC) is a module that comprises practical and theoretical
concepts. The department uses an online assessment tool called SAM to measure progress.
The online assessment evaluates students based on what they have been taught. There will be
no marking of scripts by the tutors, all assessments including the exam will be marked and
assessed by the electronic assessment tool (SAM). The tutors will assist all students to access
the SAM online programme. It is your responsibility to remember your SAM login details.

For assistance to log onto the student portal go to [Link] or ask the assistants
in the computer laboratory to help you. From the student portal go to U-link to explore the
different tools in your web learning environment for important information:

1.4 Purpose and use of this learning guide

The purpose of this learning guide is to provide students with important administrative,
organizational, and module information and, as such, a frame of reference and road map to
guide students in their planning and preparation for this module throughout the semester. It is
critical that students continually refer to the learning guide throughout the semester as it
contains important information regarding what the module entails, assessment details such as
units to be assessed for each assessment, and assessment dates. The dates contained in the
work schedule are a guideline and may differ due to unforeseen circumstances; however,
students will be notified via U-Link in the event of any such change.

The learning guide and textbook are not substitutes for lectures/tutorials. The learning guide,
textbook, other learning material, lectures, assessments, and other activities comprise an
inclusive and integrated learning experience aimed at achieving the outcomes of this module.

Attendance of lectures is crucial, as lectures do not only allow for more guidance and
direction regarding the scope of the module but also allow for meaningful engagement that is
expected to facilitate an in-depth understanding of the core issues covered in the module.
Please refer to the additional resources loaded on U-Link that will provide you with more
support on the concepts learnt in this module.

At the end of the learner guide, you will find an application form for a SICK or deferred test.
In the event that a test is missed, and you intend to apply for a sick/deferred test, kindly
complete the form, attach the relevant supporting documents, and email it to the senior tutor
on your campus within 7 days of having missed the assessment. NO application will be
considered without the forms or supporting documents.

1.5 Student conduct (academic honesty, rules of engagement, etc.)

Rights and responsibilities of students

▪ All classes are compulsory (students must attend a minimum of 80% of their classes)
▪ Learners must consult with their tutor if they experience any problems (please ensure that
you consult the tutor timeously and not when the problem becomes a crisis).

Lectures/Classes
Please note the following regarding lectures/classes:
▪ All lectures/classes are COMPULSORY and will be held FACE-TO-FACE on campus
per your timetable.
▪ Please arrive at least 5 min before the class begins. This will allow the tutor to begin the
class on time.
▪ Kindly attend your lectures/classes according to your class timetable to avoid displacing
other students assigned to that period.
▪ To supplement your learning, pre-recorded videos on the module concepts will also be
available on uLink. Kindly watch these videos prior to attending the classes.
▪ Additional resources (URLs) are also available on uLink, where you can find other videos
on the module contents.

Plagiarism
Dishonesty and plagiarism will not be tolerated. The University and the Faculty view the

issue of plagiarism in a serious light. Evidence of plagiarism or dishonesty will be dealt with
according to the University’s and/or Faculty’s Regulations. The issue of plagiarism as referred
to in the Faculty Guidelines for Ethics in Research:

Plagiarism is to:
▪ Present the ideas, words, or results of another person as your own without
acknowledging the original author.
▪ Use the ideas or words of another person without giving due credit to that person or
source.
▪ Use sentences, paragraphs, or parts of articles and books without quotation marks and/or
appropriate acknowledgment.
▪ Download sentences, paragraphs, or sections of writings from the Internet and use them
without quotation marks and/or proper acknowledgment.
▪ Use another person’s direct words without quotation marks, even when you
acknowledge the source.
▪ Use ideas without making them properly your own, even though you might have
acknowledged the original source.
▪ Formulate your words so closely to those of the original author that it is obvious that
you could not have written them without having had the source next to you, i.e., your
paraphrasing of the author’s words is too close to the original author’s use of the words,
even if you did acknowledge your source.
Source: Booth, et al. and Schuklenk

If you use the words and ideas of other people, their words must be indicated in quotation
marks and used correctly, and their source must be indicated to avoid being guilty of
plagiarism. No copying of textbooks is allowed.
Plagiarism is wrong because:
▪ It is theft of intellectual property.
▪ The person (plagiarist) lies about the contribution made to the project.
▪ The person (plagiarist) cannot accurately explain how the research was carried out.
Source: Udo Schuklenk (University of the Witwatersrand)

Benefits to be derived from consciously avoiding plagiarism:

By deliberately avoiding plagiarism, learners learn:

▪ The value of doing original work.
▪ To develop professional skills such as doing research, giving attention to detail, and
analyzing arguments.
▪ To act with honesty and integrity in their professional lives.
▪ To write professionally and engage in debate.

Conduct during classes and assessments.

▪ Please be respectful towards the tutor who will be delivering the class.
▪ Once you enter the class, be seated, put your mobile phone away, and wait for the class
to begin.
▪ Kindly pay attention in class to avoid instances of missing important content.
▪ For every class, there will be a register. Please ensure you sign the register before you
leave.
▪ All assessments will be conducted on campus. Please refer to the announcements on
uLink and the schedule in your learner guide regularly to avoid missing any
assessments.
▪ If you are unsure about something, kindly email the senior tutor on your campus to
verify details. Please refer to the email etiquette below for how to write an email.
▪ You are NOT allowed to refer to any resources during assessments.
▪ If any student is caught cheating, s/he will be referred to judicial services at UJ. The
findings of the inquiry may result in suspension or expulsion.
▪ Refer to the UJ policy on assessments:
• You need to be present at the assessment venue at least 30 minutes before the
assessment begins.
• If you arrive more than 30 minutes after the assessment has begun, you will not
be allowed to write the test.
• If you arrive late but within the allotted 30 minutes, you will still complete the
test at the designated completion time with the other students.

Email Etiquette
When writing an email, please take note of the following guidelines regarding email etiquette:
▪ Please include an appropriate title in the subject line indicating the purpose of the email
▪ Always greet the recipient of the email e.g., Good Morning Dr Minty or Dear Mrs Dube

▪ Explain the purpose of the email, make sure that your message is clear. Ensure that there
are no spelling errors in your email.
▪ Do not type the contents of the email in capital letters as this denotes shouting.
▪ Sign off your email with the following details: First name and Surname, student number,
module code and campus e.g.
