ELEMENTS
SCIENCE
GRADE 8
Self-Learning Kit
Foreword
This Self-Learning Kit is intended for
Grade 8 learners who cannot afford to
attend regular classes. It is also a kit
for blended learning, as well as
alternative modality to deliver
education to marginalize
students and those at risk of dropping
out in order to help them overcome
personal, social and economic
constants in schooling.
The competency covered in this
localized resource is: The periodic
table of elements as an organizing tool
to determine the chemical properties
of elements
The periodic table classifies
elements based on their chemical and
physical properties into several
categories: a. Metal, metalloids, non-
metal b. Groups and periods c. S, P, D,
F blocks.
Objectives
Explaining the modern periodic table of elements.

Learning competencies
Determine the key properties of an element.

What to learn?
What is the periodic table?

The periodic table is an arrangement of all the elements

known to man in accordance with their increasing
atomic number and recurring chemical properties. They
are assorted in a tabular arrangement wherein a row is a
period and a column is a group. Elements are arranged
from left to right and top to bottom in the order of their
increasing atomic numbers. Thus,
Elements in the same group will have the same
valence electron configuration and hence, similar
chemical properties.
Whereas, elements in the same period will have an
increasing order of valence electrons. Therefore, as
the energy level of the atom increases, the number
of energy sub-levels per energy level increases.

Who created the periodic table?

The structure for the contemporary periodic table was

developed in 1869 by Russian chemist Dmitri
Mendeleev, who left spaces for elements that had not
yet been discovered.
What to learn?
How many elements are there in periodic
table?

There are 118 elements that are present in the

Periodic Table. As per the periodic law, the
properties of Elements are periodic functions of their
atomic numbers.

How many metals and non metals are there

in 118 elements?

There are 118 different elements in the current

periodic table. There are 18 non-metals. There are 7
metalloids and 93 different types of metal.

What is a group in a periodic table?

A group is a column of elements in the periodic table

of the chemical elements. The elements in a group
have similar physical or chemical characteristics of
the outermost electron shells of their atoms.
What to learn?

What are the 4 blocks on the periodic

table?

The valence electron orbitals of the elements in the

periodic table are used to group them into blocks.
The four blocks are s-block, p-block, d-block, and f-
block.

Periodic classification of elements

There are in all, 18 vertical columns and 18 groups in the

long form periodic table.
These groups are numbered from 1 to 18 starting from
the left.
There are seven horizontal rows called periods in the
long form periodic table. Thus, there are seven periods
in the long form periodic table.
The elements of Groups 1, 2 and 13 to 17 are called the
main group elements. These are also called typical or
representative or normal elements.
The elements of Groups 3 to 12 are called transition
elements.
Elements with atomic number 58 to 71 (Ce to Lu)
occurring after lanthanum (La) are called lanthanides.
Elements with atomic numbers 90 to 103 (Th to Lw) are
called actinides. These elements are called f-block
elements and also as inner transition elements.

Synopsis

"The Periodic Table of Elements" is guide to the building blocks of matter,

organizing the known chemical elements based on their atomic number, electron
configuration, and recurring chemical properties. It is a fundamental tool in
chemistry, enabling scientists to predict the behavior and properties of various
substances.

The table is arranged in rows, known as periods, and columns, known as groups or
families. Elements within the same group typically share similar chemical properties
due to their similar electron configurations. This arrangement allows for easy
identification of trends and patterns in elemental behavior.

Each element is represented by a unique symbol, often derived from its name in
Latin or another language. The elements are classified into metals, nonmetals, and
metalloids based on their physical and chemical properties.

The periodic table also provides key information about each element, including its
atomic number, atomic mass, electron configuration, and chemical symbol. This
information is vital for understanding the properties and behavior of elements in
chemical reactions and interactions.

Overall, the periodic table serves as a foundational tool for chemists and scientists
across various disciplines, providing a systematic framework for understanding the
properties and behavior of the elements that make up the universe.
