Taking over watch keeping?
1. I will take over off round of engine room before 15 minutes.
2. I will use my safety gears and I will also take note book, pencil and pen.
3. I will check AC plant for accommodation and for provision I look at inlet and outlet pressure and
temperature then I will check the ampere of pumps by using torch, I will have look at the ac
refrigeration level.
4. I will check the funnel area if any spark coming out and also color of smoke [light grey].
5. Check the condition of fire flaps.
6. Check level water expansion tank.
7. Have a look at oil fire boiler, live water level indicator, steam pressure fuel temperature.
8. The calorifier have a look for steam leaks and also water level.
9. I will check compressor, air bottles and compressor air level any type of leakage.
10. I will check de aerator leakage.
11. Then we have sewage treatment also, in this we don’t see much things but yes check function of air
blower.
12. I will check generator of main engine for exhaust piston cooling JCW out let temperature, lube oil inlet
and out let pressure and temperature, air cooling temperature and pressure, and fuel temperature
pressure and also check all pumps.
13. I will check level of bilges.
14. Finally I will check abnormal alarm and parameter of ECR.
15. I will check log book and correct entry about all checks, and inform senior.
Starting procedure of generator engine?
Start of four stroke engine checks are given below.
1. Check the turbo charger sump oil level generator alternator forward aft lube oil level and diesel oil
level of service tanks.
2. Open the indicator cocks.
3. Prime the lube oil to all parts by hand pump or by motor drive priming pump.
4. Ensure that all jacket cooler valves, lube oil cooler valves, air cooler valves should be in open
condition.
5. With the use of turning bar turn the fly wheel and check for any resistance and the bottom and
bearing and check any water fuel coming out from indicator cocks.
6. While turning engine check all visible lube oil points.
7. Remove the turning bar from the fly wheel, put in place.
8. Drain the auxiliary air bottles.
9. Blow through engine by turning engine with air in order to ensure no water is inside combustion
chamber if it is present it may cause water hammering.
10. Close the indicator and pull level from stop to start.
11. When the needle in RPM indicator deflects the some valves of the lever in run condition.

12. The engine will run on fuel when the generator fix at the rated speed.
13. Put generator on load by closing air circuit breaker.
14. For checking the alternator fore and aft bearing lube oil level by opening oil plugs and alternator
and ring bearing while rotating splash oil from sump can be seen.
15. In order to synchronize the incoming generator with running generator syncroscope or dark lamp
method use.

Define bunkering?
Bunkering is a process in which ship take fuel from bunker barge.
Bunkering procedure
Before bunkering
C.E should calculate and check which bunker fuel tank to be filled and gives all manually orders.
1. After this confirmation letter from shore officer about the amount of fuel to be bunker.
2. It might be required the empty tanks and transfer the oil from one tank to another tank to avoid from
mixing of oil and new bunker.
3. A meeting held between members which participate in bunkering.[must put ppe]
4. Which tanks are to be filled, sequence order of tanks to be filled.
5. How much bunker is to be taken.
6. Emergency process of oil spill.
7. Responsibility of each crew member to be explained.
8. Sounding is taken before bunkering and record made.
9. A checklist is to filled so on nothing is missed on.
10. All deck scuppers and save all tyres are plugged.

11. Overflow tanks are checked to be empty.
12. Adequate lightening and bunker in sounding to be provided.
13. No smoking during bunkering.
14. Communication between crew should be proper.

During bunkering
1. Start of bunker pumping rate is low for checking for proper oil is coming.
2. After confirming increase pump rate.
3. Only one tank is preferred, more than one tank cause over flow.
4. When tank is full 90% keep the pump rate low.
5. In bunkering sounding and frequency is taken regularly.
6. Temperature of bunker is also check.
7. A continues sample is taken during bunkering.
After bunkering
1. Check ship draught and trim.
2. Take sounding of all bunker tanks.
3. The sample are taken during bunkering one is kept on board one for port state or IMO one for analysis
and one given to barge.
4. Chief engineer will sign receipt and amount of bunker receive the sample is send for laboratory.
5. After everything is settle the hose connection is removed.
6. The new bunker should not be used until the report from lab.
Preparation of sludge discharge plan take
Take certificate including quantity and type of sludge discharge.
Familiarized with the sledge discharge plan.
1. Name of responsible engineer.
2. Name of responsible engine rating.
3. Mention the sludge discharge piping diagram.
4. Mark the related valves.
5. Has the sludge pump emergency switch working or not.

6. Have all deck scuppers been plugged.
7. Is the pipe line in good condition?
8. No other oil transfer during sledge discharge.
9. Is opposite side manifold blank.

Emergency fire pump
1. It is fitted at steering flat shaft tunnel and forward part of ship.
2. An emergency pump has an independent diesel device and electric motor powered from emergency
generator pump.
3. Pump capacity must not less than 25 meter cube per hour.
4. If diesel engine driven.
Fuel tank for engine shall contains sufficient to some on full load for at least 3 hour sufficient. Reserve fuel for
15hour store outside machinery space.
Before departure to sea.
Before departure to port, all machinery must be kept in good working order and keep ready to sea.
24 hours prior vessel departure
1. Maintain a sufficient level of fuel in tanks.
2. Drain off water from fuel tank, while maintaining the tank temperature.
3. Ensure filter in lube oil and fuel oil pipeline are clean.
4. Check temperature f jacket water cooling.
5. Take sounding of all tanks and engine room cofferdams.
6. Start the exhaust gas boiler water circulating pump well in advance.
7. Fill up both air bottles to full pressure and drain off the condensate from the bottle.
8. Record of the above must maintained in the log book.
One/two hours before vessel departure.
1. Start the record generator check for normal operation.
2. Check main engine jacket cooling water pump.
3. Check main engine piston cooling water pump.
4. Check main engine lube oil pump.
5. Check any other main pump associated with running machinery.
6. Check main engine lube oil tank.
7. Check turbocharger lube oil level.

8. Check fuel valve nozzle cooling tanks.
9. After getting propeller clearance the main engine is to be turn on lay turning gear for a few minutes
and at the same time, the cylinder lubricator off units are to be manually operated.
