Overview of Human Body Fluids

The document outlines various body fluids, detailing their functions and components. Blood transports essential substances and plays a role in immune defense, while lymph aids in immune responses and fluid removal. Other fluids like cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, and saliva serve specific functions in protection, lubrication, and digestion.

BODY FLUIDS

1. Blood
Function: Transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and
waste products throughout the body. It also helps in
immune defense and temperature regulation.
Components:
Plasma: The liquid part of blood that carries nutrients,
hormones, and waste products.
Red Blood Cells (RBCs): Contain hemoglobin to
transport oxygen.
White Blood Cells (WBCs): Part of the immune system,
defend against infection.
Platelets: Involved in blood clotting.

2. Lymph
Function: Lymph helps in transporting white blood
cells, primarily lymphocytes, which play a role in
immune responses. It also helps in the removal of
excess fluid from tissues.
Components: Similar to blood plasma, but with less
protein. It contains white blood cells and fats.
3. Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Function: Cushions and protects the brain and spinal
cord. It also helps in the exchange of nutrients and
waste products between the brain and blood.
Location: Found in the brain's ventricles and
surrounding the spinal cord.

4. Synovial Fluid
Function: Lubricates joints, allowing smooth movement
and reducing friction between bones.
Location: Found in the cavities of synovial joints (e.g.,
knee, elbow).

5. Interstitial Fluid
Function: Provides nutrients to cells and removes waste
products. It acts as a medium through which substances
can diffuse between blood and cells.
Location: Found in the spaces between cells in tissues.
6. Saliva
Function: Moistens food for easier swallowing, contains
enzymes like amylase that begin the process of
carbohydrate digestion.
Location: Produced by salivary glands in the mouth.

7. Gastric Juices
Function: Aids in digestion by breaking down food,
particularly proteins. Contains hydrochloric acid and
digestive enzymes.
Location: Produced by the stomach lining.
8. Sweat
Function: Regulates body temperature through
evaporation. Also helps in the excretion of waste
products like urea and salts.
Location: Secreted by sweat glands in the skin.

9. Urine
Function: Excretes waste products like urea, creatinine,
and excess salts and water from the body, maintaining
fluid and electrolyte balance.
Location: Produced by the kidneys and excreted
through the urinary tract.
10. Tears
Function: Protect and lubricate the eyes. They also
contain enzymes(LYSOZYME) that help fight
infection.
Location: Produced by lacrimal gland
