TITLE PROPOSAL FORM

Where did the idea for this research come from? (Cite Literatures/Studies)

The idea for investigating the effect of TikTok on language learning inspired from several recent
studies that highlight the role of social media, particularly in video-based platforms. In recent
years, technology had a huge impact on learning and teaching processes. TikTok is a technology
tool that is prominently used by young adults. According to Muflihah et al. (2024) highlights
TikTok's educational potential, particularly in enhancing vocabulary acquisition. Its short videos
make learning accessible, exposing students to diverse vocabulary through simplified
explanations and varied contexts. Subtitles play a key role by reinforcing word meaning visually
and auditorily, aiding retention and comprehension. The platform’s informal nature makes
vocabulary learning enjoyable. Similarly, Fauziah et al., (2023) stress the value of engaging with
educational accounts on social media. The interactive, visually appealing content on platforms
like TikTok fosters practical, enjoyable language learning through frequent exposure.

According to Alghameeti (2023)Tiktok offers a variety of tools that can help users learn new
English words. These tools include short videos , captions, and interactive content, which work
vocabulary makes learning more efficient. The platform provides an interactive experience that
help learners improve their vocabulary in a fun and engaging way.

Aho (2023) also found that watching Tiktok videos can lead to the recognition of previous
unfamiliar words together to make learning both easier and more enjoyable. Tiktok’s format
encourages students to interact with the material , making it more effective than traditional
learning methods. Sometimes, words that are rarely encountered by students can be found on
TikTok . However, as learners scroll through the platform, there is a possibility that these words
may not be retained in their memory.

TikTok is an engaging social media app and has many benefits when it comes in learning. But
there are still not enough study of effectiveness in English proficiency. The researchers aim to
know whether the age of the language learners affects how they interpret and learn a new
vocabulary from their second language. This study wants to focus whether their age differences
affects how easy or difficult it is to retain information and learn new vocabularies that they have
encountered from TikTok videos.

What is the purpose of this research? (Significance of the Study)

The major purpose of this research is to evaluate the influences of TikTok on the
language learning of the Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English Students of
Pangasinan State University-Alaminos City Campus (PSU-ACC). Specifically, the research aims
to understand how TikTok's engaging, visual, and auditory content affects vocabulary and
language acquisition. Considering TikTok's widespread popularity, exploring its potential as an
English language learning tool is worthwhile. TikTok provides an opportunity to connect with
learners through an interactive and appealing approach. The research will also explore how
interactive features on TikTok, such as duet videos, hashtag features and comment interactions,
contribute to the active language practice.

Despite TikTok being a fun and engaging tool for learning, there are still not enough
study of how effective it is for English proficiency and memory retention skills. Therefore,
conducting research on the use of TikTok for English language learning can provide valuable
insights into the benefits and limitations of using the app for language learning.

State your research questions (SOP)

Q1: How does TikTok influence the vocabulary acquisition of Bachelor of Secondary Education
Major in English students in PSU-ACC?

Q2: How frequently do learners use TikTok for vocabulary learning purposes?
Q3: What are the student’s attitudes towards using TikTok as a tool for vocabulary retention?

Q4: How does the duration of exposure to TikTok affect the language students’ retention skills?

Q5: Are there any significant differences in vocabulary retention between students who use
TikTok and those who do not?

Q6: Does the age differences of the language students affects the way they learn a vocabulary?

For each research question, state the purpose?

Q1: Purpose: To measure the extent to which TikTok videos enhance students’ ability to acquire
and retain new vocabulary in a second language.

engage with TikTok for vocabulary acquisition, the researchers can correlate frequency with the
effectiveness and retention, and identify usage habits.

Q3: Purpose: To explore the students’ perceptions and feelings about using TikTok for learning.
It will help to understand their motivation, engagement, and any potential resistance or
enthusiasm towards this method, which can influence the overall effectiveness of the tool.

Q4: Purpose: To examine the relationship between the amount of time spent on TikTok and the
retention of new vocabulary. It aims to find out if longer exposure leads to better retention of if
there is an optimal duration for effective learning.

Q5: Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of TIkTok as a learning tool by comparing vocabulary
retention between users and non-users. It helps to determine if TIkTok provides a significant
advantage over traditional learning methods or other platforms.

Q6: Purpose: To know if there is a significant differences on how the second language students’
learn and retain information based on their age.
