Apple: Managing Innovation Resistance
What are some consumer characteristics Apple needs to influence to overcome
consumer resistance to its smartwatch ? What are some Psychological barriers
Apple had as a challenge against them?
Answer-
Apple needs to position its products properly such that the consumers who
considers the Apple watches as useless should give value to these . They
should associate the cultural aspects with the product such that more
customers would be willing to buy. Consumers are highly influenced by peer
pressure to buy products as there is a desire to buy products which are
popular among the society.
As the price is too high for Apple so they should come up with more exclusive
offers to satisfy the consumers or with more superior features to satisfy the
consumers.
Apple should clearly state the advantages of its smartwatches that they offer
and which other brands do not. Apple should state how it could simplify and
enhance daily tasks, such as navigation, mobile payments, and fitness
tracking.
They should focus on product positioning strategy and should focus on
providing unique functionality and product should be relevant to the needs of
the customers.
Product differentiation should be implemented – Smartwatches should be
distinct from other similar brands, and should be designed to appeal to a
specific target market. The goal of product differentiation should be to make a
product more attractive than competitors' products, and to increase sales,
brand loyalty, and growth.
Psychological Barriers
Cultural Barriers- Consumers were accustomed to buy traditional watches or
simply did not realised the need of buying Apple smartwatches for such high
prices. Apple had to overcome this typical mindset and behavior and show
that the Apple Watch provided essential benefits beyond just telling time.
Consumers were concerned with the risk related to these like battery life,
privacy issues and the fragility of the product.
Emotional barriers- Consumers in third world countries like India value old and
traditional products a lot that are associated with their culture for decades .
Hence overcoming this typical mindset is difficult as it involves introducing a
new variety of product .
Functional Barriers- People are resistant to changing routines and are not
willing to adopt a new technology easily . Hence convincing the people was a
difficult task
