RE: Reference Letter for Mark Otieno

Dear sir/madam,

I have known and worked with Mark Otieno on various projects over the last 10
years. Mark has expressed his interest in the MSc Biological Sciences at The
University of the Western Cape. I highly recommend Mark for this programme as
a stellar scholar and young leader who has proven track record of excellent
academic, professional and leadership achievements.

Mark graduated from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science &

Technology (JOOUST) in Kenya with a Second Class Honour degree (Upper class
division) with BSc. Agricultural Extension & Education. This successfully placed
him at the top 10% of his graduating class. Over the years at JOOUST, Mark
demonstrated brilliance in his academic studies. He consistently performed well
above expectations in his academic assignment and interactions with the larger
academic community at the university. It is his discipline, commendable
leadership qualities and selfless service to others that earned him immense
respect among students, teaching faculty and the entire community. One of his
greatest known tagline has always been “service to humanity is the most
underrated service to self.”

In various capacities, Mark has demonstrated not only strong work ethics but
also keen interest in community leadership and development. When I co-founded
Dophia Agroforestry to work with smallholder farmer in planting high-value,
multipurpose agroforestry trees, I worked with Mark as one of the volunteers. His
role was community mobilisation, and supporting in coordinating planting and
training activities. In this role, Mark spearheaded the identification of 3 tree
leaders. He also assisted in bringing on board local government official to
collaborate with our tree planting efforts across 2 locations. This has been a
critical foundation for Dophia as we now operate in 5 locations, thanks to the
initial strong stakeholder relations.

Mark is keen on training the next generation of young environmental champions.

Through his work at Dophia, he identified a niche in the training of environmental
stewards in primary and secondary schools. He collaborates with schools to train
students on gardening, tree planting, and responsible waste management. In
2022, he worked with 3 primary schools and 2 secondary schools. In all the 5
schools, he helped revive the 4K and agricultural society clubs.
Mark is currently a playing a key role in providing for his siblings and family. This
has made it constantly challenging for him to enroll in a postgraduate
programme despite his deep desire to do so. Therefore, the Mastercard
Foundation Scholarship will not only provide an opportunity to access quality
education from a prestigious institution but also create a clear pathway for
leadership development and give back for a promising young leader.

Yours sincerely,

Phenny Adhiambo Omondi,
