Digital Audio System Design Assignment

The assignment for ELEC71010 Advanced Digital Signal Processing requires students to design and implement a digital audio system, specifically a 7-band graphic equalizer with interference tone elimination. Students must conduct a literature review on signal processing developments in their chosen application area and justify their design choices using LabVIEW. The final submission must adhere to IEEE journal standards and include various sections such as abstract, introduction, and results, along with supporting references.

DSP methods related to rapidly evolving research areas and systematic Understanding
application of various techniques.

2) Analyse complex DSP systems using a variety of analytical tools and ability
Analysis
to learn new tools independently.

3) Find solutions for a wide range of DSP applications and critical evaluation of Application
methodologies and techniques in terms of algorithm requirement and

implementation platforms.

4) Design complex algorithms and systematically take into account non-ideal Learning

effects and practical limitations. Communicate the methodology, results and Communication
conclusions of work done.

The assignment will assess the following AHEP3 learning outcomes:

SM7MA comprehensive understanding of the relevant scientific principles of the specialisation

EA6M Ability both to apply appropriate engineering analysis methods for solving complex problems in
engineering and to assess their limitations

EA5m Ability to use fundamental knowledge to investigate new and emerging technologies

EA7M Ability to collect and analyse research data and to use appropriate engineering analysis tools in
tackling unfamiliar problems, such as those with uncertain or incomplete data or specifications, by the
appropriate innovation, use or adaptation of engineering analytical methods

D9M Knowledge, understanding and skills to work with information that may be incomplete or
uncertain, quantify the effect of this on the design and, where appropriate, use theory or experimental
research to mitigate deficiencies

D10M Knowledge and comprehensive understanding of design processes and methodologies and the
ability to apply and adapt them in unfamiliar situations

G1Apply their skills in problem solving, communication, information retrieval, working with others, and
the effective use of general IT facilities

Information

The assignment needs to be completed using LabVIEW. Please find information to download student

Problem 1

Signal Processing is being used in a diverse range of applications due to the availability of low-cost
devices which are programmed to implement digital signal processing algorithms.

a) Choose an application area within your programme of study and briefly discuss the developments
made in signal processing techniques within the chosen area of application by performing a critical
literature review.

b) Briefly discuss the future of signal processing in the chosen area of application.

Note: Programme of study is your course, i.e., 'Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy Systems',
or 'Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering'. You must choose an application area within your
programme of study for Problem 1. The solution to this problem should be provided in the 'Literature
Review' section of your paper.

Problem2

Suppose you are working as a design engineer in Staffs Electronics Ltd. The company is based in Stoke-
on-Trent and develops products to be used in Electrical Power,Electronics and Telecommunication
sector. You are required to design a real-time digital audio processor [Link] system will function
as a 7-band graphic equaliser for high quality music [Link], the system will also be able to
eliminate three interference tones present at 3.5kHz, 7 kHz, and 10.5 kHz.

You are required to implement the system using LabVIEW. The 7-band equaliser should be controlled
via a Graphical User Interface (GUI) running on a personal computer. The interference tone elimination
functionality should offer 4 possible functions (selectable by using switches and LEDs to indicate the
selected operation):

1. Only the 3.5 kHz tone is removed.

2. Only the 7 kHz tone is removed.

3. Only the 10.5 kHz tone is removed.

4. All tones are removed simultaneously.

5. No tones removed.

The implemented system should perform as close to ideal as possible and use minimum DSP resources.

You are required to determine appropriate specification for filters and justify the reasons for choosing
various parameter values as well as particular type of filters. You may find it beneficial to present filter
specification in the form of a table. Waveforms showing results in

both time and frequency domain should be included n your paper to demonstrate correct system
functionality for both equalisation and interference tone elimination.

The block diagram of a 3-band audio equaliser, shown in Figure 1, is available as it was developed by an
employee whilst developing another product. In Figure 1, LPF, BPF, and HPF blocks represent lowpass,
bandpass, and highpass filters, respectively. The parameters k1,k2, and k3 represent the gain factors for
filter outputs.
