5E Inquiry-Based Teaching Model Guide

Chapter 5 of MATH 118 focuses on inquiry-based teaching, specifically the 5E instructional model which includes Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, and Evaluation. The chapter outlines the importance of this model in enhancing students' understanding and interest in mathematics through hands-on activities and cognitive engagement. Pre-service teachers are expected to identify components of the model, design lesson plans, and demonstrate their application in teaching.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this lesson, the pre-service teacher (PST) should be
able to:
a. identify the components of 5E’s teaching model;
b. describe how 5E’s model is appropriate in Mathematics teaching and
learning;
c. design a lesson plan using 5E’s model; and,
d. demonstrate the designed lesson plan using 5E’s model.

INQUIRY-BASED TEACHING
The inquiry approach, sometimes termed “discovery”,
“heuristic”, and “problem solving” is defined simply as a
teaching method which is modeled after the
investigative processes of scientists.

Research suggests that inquiry-based science instruction

enhances students’ understanding of concepts in
science and increases students’ interest in the field
(Hoftsein and Mamlok-Naaman, 2007).

5 E’s OF INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING

The 5E Inquiry-Based Instructional Model is based upon
cognitive psychology, constructivist theory to
learning, and best practices in STEM instruction
(Bybee and Landes 1990).

The 5E Instructional Model brings coherence to different

teaching strategies, provides connections among
educational activities, and helps [science] teachers make
decisions about interactions with students (BSCS 2019).

5 E’s OF INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING

• The teacher gauges student prior

knowledge and/or identifies possible

Engagement misconceptions (Duran and Duran

2004).
• Mentally engage the students with a
question or activity.

5 E’s OF INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING

• Provides students with a common base of

hands-on activities. These activities will help
students use prior knowledge to inquire,
Exploration generate new ideas, and conduct a
preliminary investigation (Bybee 2009).
• Students carry out out hands-on activities to
make sense of a concept.

5 E’s OF INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING

• Students explain their understanding of

concepts and the teacher corrects students’
misconceptions (Bybee 2009). During this phase
Explanation the teacher may provide formal definitions,
notes, and labels (Duran and Duran 2004).
• Teacher explains concepts and skills introduced
in the Explore phase.

5 E’s OF INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING

• Students are encouraged to apply their

new understanding of concepts, while

Elaboration reinforcing new skills (Duran and

Duran, 2004).
• Students conduct additional activities
to apply learning to new situations.

5 E’s OF INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING

• According to Bybee (2009), “The evaluation

phase encourages students to assess their

Evaluation
understanding and abilities and provides
opportunities for teachers to evaluate student
progress toward achieving the educational
objectives” (p. 5).
• Students review and reflect on their learning.
