Grade 9 Circle Theorems Proofs

The document contains a series of geometry problems related to circle theorems for Grade 9 students. Each question requires students to prove various properties and relationships involving angles and triangles formed by points on the circumference of circles. The problems emphasize reasoning and justification for each step in the proofs.

Grade 9 Homework Circle Theorems

Proof

Q1.

A, B and C are points on the circumference of a circle, centre O.

AOB is a diameter of the circle.

Prove that angle ACB is 90°

You must not use any circle theorems in your proof.

(Total for question = 4 marks)

Q2.

A, B, C and D are points on the circumference of a circle, centre O.

ABC is an equilateral triangle.

OD bisects side AB at M.

Prove that ODA is an equilateral triangle.

Give reasons for each stage of your working.

(Total for question = 4 marks)

Q3.

A, B and C are points on a circle, centre O.

RBP is the tangent to the circle at B.

SCP is the tangent to the circle at C.
AOC is a diameter of the circle.

Prove that angle AOB is equal to angle CPB.

You must give reasons at each stage.

(Total for question = 5 marks)

Q4.

A, B, C and D are points on the circumference of a circle, centre O.

FDE is a tangent to the circle.

(a) Show that y – x = 90

You must give a reason for each stage of your working.

(3)
Dylan was asked to give some possible values for x and y.

He said,

"y could be 200 and x could be 110, because 200 – 110 = 90"

(b) Is Dylan correct?

You must give a reason for your answer.
