Who is a Consumer??
◦ Any individual who purchases products or services. for his personal
use and not for manufacturing and resale is called a consumer. A
consumer is the one who is the decision maker whether an not to
buy an item at the store, on someone who is influenced by
advertisement and marketing. Every time someone goes to a store
and buys anything, they make a decision as a consumer
◦ Any single or group of person, other that the buyer who buys the
product or services consumes the product by seeking his/her
permission falls under the category of a consumer. In simple words,
the consumer can be termed goods and services.

Consumer Exploitation
◦ Consumer Exploitation is a situation in which a consumer is
cheated and given false information by the producer large
companies with huge wealth, power and reach can manipulate the
market in many ways. At times, they pass on media, and other
false information through the source to attract consumers.
◦ Since consumers are large in no. segregated they often find
themselves in a complaint and are weak position especially when
there is a regarding goods and services.

◦ In India, the government has taken many steps to protect the
consumers and in 2005, the Government of India started a
national campaign ‘Jago Grahak Jago (Wake Up Consumer)’, to
create awareness among consumers. An enlightened consumer is
an empowered consumer.
◦ ‘Jago Grahak Jago’ awareness program was launched by the
Department of Food, Government of India.
◦ The Government of India used various channels to create
awareness among consumers.

Consumer Protection Act 1986
◦ The Consumer Protection Act, 1986 (COPRA) was an Act
of the Parliament of India enacted in 1986 to protect
the interests of consumers in India.
◦ The above act was passed in the Assembly in October
1986.
◦ Consumer Protection Act 1986, came into force on
December 24, 1986.
◦ The above act was replaced by the Consumer Protection
Act, 2019.
