Magnetic
effect of
Electric
Current
Oersted Experiment :
IN 1820, Oersted discovered the relationship between
electricity and magnetism. He accidently discovered
that when a magnetic compass is placed near a current
carrying wire, it produces a magnetic field around it which
deflects the compass needle.
Magnetic Field
:The region around a magnetic
material or a moving electric charge
within which the force of
magnetism acts
Magnet :
Substance which can attract small pieces of Iron, Cobalt,
Nickel [ Ferromagnetic Substance ] ]
Or
Substances which produce magnetic field
around them are called magnets.
Poles of a Magnet:
North Pole : End which align towards north
of Earth
South Pole : End which align towards south
of Earth
Magnet Field Lines :
Imaginary Field lines which represent magnetic field around
them
Properties of Magnetic Field
lines:
• Travel from North pole to South pole
outside the magnet but the MFL goes South
pole to North pole inside the magnet.
• Magnetic field is strong if they are closer .
• Magnetic Field lines never cross each other
.
• Tangent to magnetic field lines shows the
direction of field .
1. Straight Wire :
Imaginary Field lines which represent magnetic field around
them
Factor affecting magnetic field for straight
conductor:
• Distance - Magnetic Field strength is
inversely proportional to the distance from
conductor .
• Current - Magnetic field strength ∝ to the
amount of current flowing in the conductor .
• Direction of Current – If the direction of current will changes
then the direction of magnetic field is also changes .
Right Hand
Thumb Rule:
If a current carrying
conductor is imagined to be
held in your right hand such
that the thumb points along
the direction of current, then
the direction of the wrapped
fingers will give the direction
of magnetic field lines.
