Directions. Imagine you are a compass that sets direction for yourself and others. How can you
effectively give direction? And if your inner compass is weakened, what other alternatives can you
use to at least make sure that you are going to the right direction? Write your answers in your
notebook.
A compass is a device that indicates direction, and also one of the most important instruments
for navigation. Directions tell someone how or where to do something or in which order to do
something. It is important to understand the purpose of the directions for us to start and finish
something. If I am a compass that sets direction for myself and others, I can effectively give direction
by familiarizing myself first, taking responsibilities, knowing how to influence, and introducing my
whole self to others.
By familiarizing yourself, you can start to see differences in those around you in a deeper way.
You have a language to think about and talk about differences in what energizes you on how you
make decisions, how you take in information, and more. When you understand yourself better, it
would be easier for you to give directions to others. This is very important because, I believe that you
can’t instruct others without knowing how to instruct yourself first. Second, taking responsibilities is
crucial for success because it helps you work through your mistakes without being weighed down by
regret, guilt, or shame. It also builds strength of character as a person becomes better at admitting
they are not perfect and doing what needs to be done to make up for their mistakes. This helps you to
know your strength and weaknesses when it comes to giving directions. Third, for us to be truly
effective in giving directions, we must master the ability to influence others. By definition, influence is
the ability to affect the behavior of others in a particular direction, leveraging key tactics that involve,
connect, and inspire them. Last is introducing yourself to others. It is important in giving directions
because, It emphasizes what others will get and expect from you. This will help them to know how to
deal with you.
If my inner compass is weakened, the alternatives that I am going to use to at least make sure
that I am going to the right direction is by being strong and motivating myself to not give up even
some stages doesn’t look too promising. I will enhance and improve my weaknesses and keep on
practicing it. I believe that as long as you work for something, it will work out and all will be alright in
time.

1. Now that telling exact direction is easy because of technology, how will it be beneficial for you
to learn basic compass reading? Cite an example.

Learning how to use a compass is one of the best things that you need to learn. The reason is
simple, compass learning can help you navigate on a hike or even while you are on a trip.
Basic compass concepts can be really helpful in variety of stages of life. Now that telling exact
direction is easy because of technology, It would be beneficial for me to learn basic compass
reading. That is because, fundamental compass ideas can truly help us on our everyday life
experiences. During this time, I know that many people usually use google map to know their
locations and directions but, what if internet connection is not available? Of course, we can
make use of our compass. We can’t rely exclusively on a phone or GPS receiver because
batteries can die and gadgets can malfunction. A compass relies only on Earth's magnetic
fields that’s why it is really reliable. Knowing basic compass learning can benefit us if ever we
got lost or we are in the place that we aren’t familiar. The best way to avoid this kind of
struggles is by learning how to utilize a compass.

LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON
Based on the discussion you had on previous modules, you have learned about outdoor recreation
particularly mountaineering and outdoor skills that you need to be familiar with. Can you still identify
the skills that you have learned from the previous lessons? Write your answer here:

Base on the discussion that we had on our previous modules, I have learned many things and
lessons about outdoor recreation particularly mountaineering and other outdoor skills. I have learned
that, mountaineering, or alpinism, is the set of outdoor activities that involves ascending tall
mountains. Mountaineering-related activities include traditional outdoor climbing, skiing and traversing
via ferratas. Another outdoor activity that we discussed is camping, which is an outdoor activity
involving overnight stays away from home, either without shelter or using basic shelter such as a tent

or a recreational vehicle. I have learned that this can be an adventure and is a great way to enjoy the
outdoors. I learned the different names for styles of camping just like, 'wild camping' which is often
used to refer to any form of camping outside an organized campsite. Another one is trekking which is
a long-distance hiking that is consists of walking for several days or several weeks and being entirely
or partially self-sufficient. I have learned that trekking improves our physical health immensely.
Spending multiple hours on the trail, climbing around boulders, rock hopping and ascending hills
gives our whole body a workout, improving our strength, agility and cardio fitness.

Let’s Reflect!
REFLECTIVE LEARNING SHEET NO.1
Create/Write your five etiquettes that could help to prevent us from getting and spreading the virus.

My five etiquettes that could help to prevent us from getting and spreading the virus is first,
stay at home if you’re not feeling well and if you experience some symptoms of the virus to stop the
spread of illness. We need to protect ourselves by taking rest and recovering properly to lessen our
risk to the virus. Second, wear your face mask if you go outside and bring alcohol or sanitizer .
Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with soap and water
or alcohol-based hand rub that’s why it is really important specially when we are crowded
places. Third, cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze. Covering your mouth
while coughing and sneezing can help us to prevent the spread of virus because, taking note of these
things can help us to reduce the spread of germs. Fourth, avoid touching your face. This can help us
in preventing infections. We need to keep our hands away from our eyes, nose, and mouth especially
when it is dirty. These mucous membranes are a portal of entry for germs that cause respiratory
infections, including COVID-19. Fifth, consider the safety health protocols. As COVID-19 continues to
exist in our communities, it is more important than ever to follow strict protocols to ensure the health
and safety of our community. By following these protocols, we can help each other to lessen the
spread f the virus.

Prioritizing health protocols in community settings, such as wearing masks, hand sanitizing, and practicing social distancing, is critical in mitigating the spread of COVID-19. These measures reduce transmission risks by limiting interactions that can introduce the virus into vulnerable populations, ensuring community health safety, and preventing healthcare systems from being overwhelmed .

Learning to navigate using a traditional compass enhances cognitive skills such as spatial awareness, critical thinking, and problem-solving as individuals manually align to cardinal points and map out routes. Practically, it provides reliability in situations where digital tools like GPS may fail due to technical issues or lack of connectivity. This skill enhances independence and readiness for outdoor adventures .

Personal responsibility is critical in effectively giving directions, as it allows individuals to acknowledge and learn from their mistakes without being burdened by regret. This builds character and enhances one's ability to guide others. Influence is equally important as it involves the capacity to affect the behavior of others in a positive direction by engaging and inspiring them. When individuals understand their own strengths and are able to influence others, they can offer clear and effective guidance .

Reflective practices in learning enable individuals to process experiences, identifying successes and areas for improvement. This reflection fosters adaptability by encouraging a mindset oriented towards evaluating options and adjusting strategies when guidance tools or control methods change unexpectedly. Individuals become more resilient, capable of navigating new or uncertain situations with confidence .

Outdoor recreation skills such as mountaineering and trekking engage individuals in physically demanding activities that enhance strength, agility, and cardiovascular health. Activities like climbing, hiking, and rock-hopping require sustained physical effort and balance, which boost overall fitness levels and improve endurance. Furthermore, these skills promote mental well-being by fostering a connection with nature .

Understanding the purpose of directions when using a compass is crucial because it helps in starting and finishing tasks accurately. By familiarizing oneself with cardinal points, such as North, East, South, and West, a person can effectively visualize and determine their orientation and movement, especially in unfamiliar terrains. This knowledge helps in aligning the compass properly with the Earth's magnetic poles and improves overall navigation skills .

Basic compass reading is beneficial because it provides a reliable way to navigate without relying on digital devices that can fail due to battery depletion or technical malfunctions. A compass works by interacting with the Earth's magnetic fields, making it a dependable tool in situations where technology is unavailable or ineffective, such as remote hiking areas without cell service .

Skills such as traditional outdoor climbing and skiing are integral to mountaineering as they offer diverse physical challenges and a complete engagement with the environment. Climbing requires strength, technique, and strategic thinking, while skiing offers agility and cardiovascular conditioning. Together, they provide a holistic experience that enhances physical endurance, mental resilience, and appreciation for natural landscapes .

When one's personal guidance falters, maintaining motivation involves adopting a strong mindset focused on perseverance. Strategies include recognizing and addressing personal weaknesses through continuous practice, setting incremental goals to monitor progress, and using positive reinforcement to stay committed to objectives. These approaches help align actions with desired directions even when inner guidance feels unstable .

The concept of a "fitness compass" can guide individuals to incorporate varied exercises aligned with different cardinal points to enhance overall fitness. For example, North could represent cardiovascular exercises, South could signify strength training, East for flexibility workouts, and West for balance exercises. This structured approach ensures a balanced workout routine targeting multiple aspects of fitness .
