PERMACULTURE AND COMMUNITY BUILDING
LETS BUILD IT 2011 Summer Courses, is a hands-on, organic and natural building set
of three courses promoted and performed by LuzkuFuzku Permaculture and Community Building They will take place in Trinta, Portugal, at the Quinta Dionisio, LuzkuFuzku headquarters and stage of previous similar initiatives. Pedro Duarte, architect by training and organic builder by nature, will run the courses, make the works happen and supply theoretical information. All proposed building and structures are his original designs. Techniques will vary but they will cover a fair amount of natural building ways. Place for innovation will also be present. Working sessions will be predominantly practical, opening room for theory and information as an answer to questions raised on site. At Quinta Dionisio we will finish the Pocket Theatre and we will go through a number of small new structures. Depending on participants number, we propose three intensive ten days periods on each summer month July, August and September. Each Course is an independent unit for which people can register separately. Courses will be from 10:00 to 15:00. Prices include staying on the farm (in a Yurt or tent with comfortable beds) main meals and shower. Afternoons will be free for walking in the mountains, swimming on the river or the lake, playing... and we can light a camp fire in the evenings. Oh!, by the way, languages spoken for the courses will be English, French, Spanish and... body language.

IMPORTANT:
Special 1.200 price for people attending the Zutphen course and one course in Trinta. Transport from and to Porto airport (200km from the farm) can be arranged for groups up to 8 people at very interesting prices. Courses will take place with a maximum of 12 people per course. Courses language: English... and loads of body language in the building process.
Self-building, or building without experts, is a key point for this course. Team work and the use of natural materials come consequently next. The belief is that we can achieve an outstanding thing above the ground appealing to very low technology at anyones reach, based on natural materials. Natural materials have a long list of ethical reasons to be used but, not less important, there are the smells, textures and sounds, the pleasure and the comfort, recognition and a way to connect in their use... Another appealing facet on this kind of event, where each and everyone is supposed to have space to be as they are, consists in having the chance to stop and feel, ask, talk, give, take, exchange... so the building itself, is no more than a pretext. It will be beautiful and meaningful if, and only if, the path we took was itself beautiful and meaningful. We would be very happy to have a significant number of women involved. Why women? Well, just because historically women have been outcast from building for ages since ever. No actual explanation for this its a vicious prejudice and its time to reverse it and prove how much we all can benefit from their contribution. The most constant presence in the course will be Pedro Duarte, from LuzkuFuzku, an architect by training and a natural builder by heart. He gave up an over twenty year career as a classic architect to embrace organic design and building. Also, he is committed to shatter the expert myth on building... adapting a quote for artists: builders are not a special quality of people but each person is a special quality of builder. A workshop in New Mexico Build Here Now 2001, at Lama Foundation, was the crucial mind shift. Scattered works in the Portuguese northern mountains after that and the works for last three years in Quinta Dionisio, are the evident results in shifting attitude.
The Pocket Theatre is already there, standing by the river, at the bottom of the slope. Music, theatre and training took place in this exquisite building. More than 50 people during different stages helped to make it come to life.
Now it needs the final pushing to plaster the walls with clay.
A new structure for the medicinal plants garden on a dream spot on the river banks. It will be accomplished in two courses: one for the Pigeon House and another for the Green House and the linkage structure.

The Acoustic Shell will be raised on a terrace, close to the river, where the surrounding fields create a natural amphitheatre. It will be used for unplugged music and small plays in the open.

Two small structures for the Medicinal Garden. Their purpose is to function as heat stores to fasten the growing and ripening of some particular plants. They will also feature a green box on each one. Main technique: cordwood.
