Question 1
A perfectly stirred tank is used to heat a flowing liquid. The dynamics of the system have
been determined as shown in Figure Q1.1.
Figure Q1.1: Dynamics of liquid heating system
where:
P is the power applied to the heater
Q is the heating rate of the system
T is the actual temperature in the tank
Tm is the measured temperature
A test has been made with P' varied sinusoidally as; P ′ = A1 sin(ωt)
For these conditions, the measured temperature is T ′ = A2 sin(ωt + ϕ)
𝐴
Then; Amplitude ratio; 𝐴𝑅 = 𝐴2 , Phase shift= 𝜙

Bode diagram for the open loop system is shown in the Figure Q1.2. According to the
Bode plot, the critical frequency (c) is 2.49rad/s and Gain margin (Gm) is 11.5dB.
𝐺𝑚 (𝑑𝐵) = 20log(1⁄𝐴𝑅 ); where; Gm = Gain margin, AR= Amplitude ratio

(i). Draw feedback control block diagram with a proportional controller (Kc) and
evaluate close loop transfer function.
(ii). If Kc=1, evaluate stability of the close loop system by using Bode diagram and
also describe suitability of Bode stability criteria to evaluate stability of this
dynamic system.
(iii). Design a PID Controller to control the system.
