ASSIGNMENT-01

STRUCTURAL MECHANICS
DCE-2nd YEAR

1. Discuss the silent features of stress- strain curve for mild steel.
2. Define ‘Stress’ and ‘Strain’.
3. Classify the engineering materils.

ASSIGNMENT-02

1. Write names of different types of beam and explain them.

2. What are the different types of loads acting on a beam?
3. Define the term shear force and bending moment. What is the relation between these two?
4. Drive the relationship between load, shear force and bending moment for a simply
supported beam.

ASSIGNMENT-03

1. Prove that the bending stress induced varies linearly across the depth of a beam when
it is subjected to a bending moment M.
2. Differentiate between “Pure bending”.
3. Define the following: (A) Section Modulus (B) Neutral surface and neutral axis. (C)
Flexural Rigidity
4. State and explain various assumptions made in the theory of bending.

ASSIGNMENT-04

1. What do you mean by end conditions of a column? What are the important end conditions for
a column?
2. Write short notes of the followings.
(i) Long and short column. (लम्बे तथा छोटेस्तम्भ)
(ii) Slenderness ratio. (तनुता अनुपात )
(iii) Failure of long columns
(iv) Collapsing load
(v) Equivalent length
(vi) Critical load or buckling load
3. Explain the Euler’s column theory and what are the assumptions considered in Euler’s
column theory.
ASSIGNMENT-05
1. Draw shear force and bending moment diagram for an overhanging beam with uniformly
distributed load throughout.
2. Explain how the position of contra flexure determined.
3. Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams of a simple supported beam of length 7m carrying
uniformly distributed load as shown in figure-

ASSIGNMENT-06

1. The cross section of a cast iron beam in fig.2. The beam is simply supported at the ends
and carries a uniformly distributed load of 200 N/cm. If the span of the beam is 3m,
determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses in the beam.

2. Give the Shear force and bending moment diagram for a cantilever beam having
uniformly distributed load throughout and a concentrated load at the free end.
