Suggested answer for Tutorial 6
1. (i) Intensity (I) = /
= output lumen of the light source
(solid angle) = S/r2
where S-area of a spherical surface;
r- radius of the sphere
As surface area of a spherical light source = 4r2
= 4r2 / r2 = 4
I = 2000 / 4 = 159cd
(ii) Luminance (L) = I / S
I = 159cd
S = projected area of the spherical light source = x 0.52
L = 159 / x 0.52 = 202.4 cd/m2
(iii) Illuminance (E) = I / d2
d - distance between the centre of the light source and the surface
E= 159 / 32 = 17.7 lux
2. As E= I /d2
180 = I / 2.22; I = 871.2 cd
the luminous intensity of the lamp is 871.2 cd.
a) the illumination directly below the lamp at the floor level;
E = I / d2 = 871.2 /3.22 =85.1 lux;
b) the illumination directly below the lamp but at the edge of the floor:
the distance d (measured from the edge of the room to the lamp is
√(1.52 +3.22) = 3.53m
cosθ= 3.2 / 3.53 = 0.9065
E = I cosθ/ d2 = 871.2 x 0.9065 /3.532 = 63.4 lux d 3.2

3. = (E x A) / (U.F. X M.F.)
= 120 x (10 x 10) / (0.65 x 0.8) = 23,077 lumens
4a Room Index = L x W / (L+W) x H = 10 x 10 / (10+10) x 4
= 1.25
4b From the Table, for C=0.7; W=0.3 and F=0.2
U.F. = 0.47
4c = (E x A) / (U.F. X M.F.)
= 120 x (10 x 10) / (0.47 x 0.8)
= 31914.9 lumens
4d No. of light fittings = 31914.9 / 3600
= 8.86
Hence, minimum 9 nos. of light fittings should be used.

Electrical Installation (EEE4118)
5a Room Index = L x W / (L+W) x Hm
= 20 x 12 / (20+12) x (4-0.85)
= 2.38
5b From the Table, for C=0.7; W=0.5 and F=0.2
U.F. = 0.6 + [(0.03/0.5) x (0.38)] = 0.6228
5c = (E x A) / (U.F. X M.F.)
= 450 x (20 x 12) / (0.6228 x 0.8)
= 216,763 lumens
No. of light fittings = 216763 / 4500
= 48.2 (say 49 nos.)
5d Proposed lighting layout: 7 columns x 7 rows
Sc = 12/7 = 1.71m
Length of lighting fitting: 1500mm
Sr = 20/7 = 2.86m
Sc/2 Sc Sc Sc/2
Space to Height ratio:
Sr/2
Sc/Hm = 1.71 / 3.15 = 0.54 Sr
Sr/Hm = 2.86 / 3.15=0.90
Both ratios do not exceed SHR (Nominal)
=1.50:1
Uniformity is complied.
