is using Caesar cipher and key value is 21, What does she wants to convey?
9. Why do we employ combination switching schemes such as TST? 2
10. Draw a 5x5 crossbar switch and mention its merits compared to time switch. 2

11. a)(i)Explain SONET layered architecture and map the layer with OSI diagram. 7

(ii) Consider sender (S) transmitting a file of size 106 bits to a destination machine 6
(D) over a network of two routers (R1 and R2) and three communication links (L1,
L2 and L3). L1 connects S to R1;L2 connects R1 to R2; and L3 connects R2 to D.
Let each link be of length 200km. Assume the signal travel over each link at a
speed of 109 meters per second. Assume that the link bandwidth on each link is
1Gbps. Let the file be broken down into 1000 packets each of size 1000 bits.
Calculate the total sum of transmission and propagation delays in transmitting the
file from S to D?
OR
b)(i) Discuss with a neat diagram the RS232 physical layer interface and Design 7
the wiring connection between MODEM and computer device using DB9 pin
connector for data transmission.

(ii) There are 100 nodes in a communication network. You are required to 6
minimize the number of links in the network so as to reduce the installation cost.
Which topology and transmission media you will deploy. Justify your choices.
12. a)Explain any one bit oriented protocol used to transmit frames in packet switched 13
network and its frame structure in [Link] setup a Asynchronous balanced
mode connection between two Stations and explain the information transfer
between them under selective repeat protocol.
OR
b)Discuss in detail IEEE 802.11 frame format and MAC protocol used in it. 13
13. a) Explain the concept of Link state routing protocol, Using the underlying 13
principles, compute the routing table for node 2.

OR
b) Explain the concept of leaky bucket algorithm, using the principle determine 13
how long will it take to clear the traffic with a leaky bucket traffic shaper having a
leak rate of 6pkt per sec and bucket size 15pkts. How many packets does it need
to drop? The arrival rate of packet is shown below

Start time End time Arrival rate

(sec) (sec) (pkts per sec)
0 3 10
3 5 15
5 7 18
7 9 14
9 12 5

14. a) (i) Explain three way handshake based connection established in TCP and 9
compare TCP and UDP.

(ii) Sender transmits a 3600 byte datagram into a link that has an MTU of 900 4
bytes. Suppose a original datagram is stamped with an identification number o
last 4 digit of your registration number. How many fragments are generated?
Describe their full characteristics of TCP frame structure with diagram by using
above parameters. Point out the possible places of reassembly after
fragmentation.
OR
b) (i) With an example, discuss how File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used in file 9
transfer.

(ii)The following message is received by a person "yzektacgthatemnniost". If the 4

message is encrypted by using the simple Column Transposition method with
multiple rounds, with the key as 31452. Find the original plaintext.
15. a) (i) With a neat diagram, explain digital cross connect system. 10
(ii) Determine the implementation complexity of 1024 channel TST switch with 16 3
TDM links, 64 channels and the time slot of space switch is 25.
OR
b) (i) Explain the single stage space switching and list its drawbacks. Draw 3- 10
stage space division switch and compute the total number of cross points.
(ii) A 3 stage switching structure accommodate 128 input and 128 output. For first 3
16 stage and 16 last stage, find the number of cross points for non-blocking.

be transmitted for two cases :
Case 1: No repeaters are employed
Case 2: 20 repeaters are employed and each repeater has a gain of 20dB
