SECTION - E
Question No. 37 to 39 are case-based/data -based questions with 2 to 3 short sub-parts.
Internal choice is provided in one of these sub-parts.

37. In 1820, a Danish physicist, Hans Christian Oersted, discovered that there was a relationship between
electricity and magnetism. By setting up a compass through a wire carrying an electric current, Oersted
showed that moving electrons can create a magnetic field. Oersted found that, for a straight wire carrying
a steady (DC) current: The magnetic field lines encircle the current- carrying wire. The magnetic field lines
lie in a plane perpendicular to the wire. If the direction of the current is reversed, the direction of the
magnetic force reverses. The strength of the field is directly proportional to the magnitude of the current.
The strength of the field at any point is inversely proportional to the distance of the point from the wire.
a) Who discovered the relation between electric and magnetic field? (1M)
b) If magnitude of the current in the wire increases, what will be the strength of magnetic field? (1M)
c) A compass needle is placed below a straight conducting wire. If current is passing through the
conducting wire from North to South. In which direction does the compass needle deflect? (2 M)
( OR )
What are the factor changes If the direction of the current is reversed in a current carrying conductor
placed in a magnetic field ?

38. A solenoid is a long helical coil of wire through which a current is run in order to create a magnetic
field. The magnetic field of the solenoid is the superposition of the fields due to the current through each
coil. It is nearly uniform inside the solenoid and close to zero outside and is similar to the field of a bar
magnet having a north pole at one end and a south pole at the other depending upon the direction of
current flow. The magnetic field produced in the solenoid is dependent on a few factors such as, the
current in the coil, number of turns per unit length etc.
a) What is a solenoid? Draw a sketch to show the magnetic field pattern produced by a current-carrying
solenoid. (1M)
b) Name the type of magnet with which the magnetic field pattern of a current-carrying solenoid
resembles.
c) What is the shape of field lines inside a current-carrying solenoid? What does the pattern of field lines
inside a current-carrying solenoid indicate? What type of core should be put inside a current-carrying
solenoid to make it into an electromagnet? (2M)
( OR )
List three ways in which the magnetic field strength of a current-carrying solenoid can be increased?
Explain.

39. Electricity and magnetism are essentially two aspects of the same thing, because a changing electric
field creates a magnetic field, and a changing magnetic field creates an electric field. (This is why physicists
usually refer to "electromagnetism" or "electromagnetic" forces together, rather than separately.) To
demonstrate that an electric current (i.e., moving electric charge) generates a magnetic field, all you need
do is simply place a magnetic compass next to a wire in a circuit. When current is passed through the wire,
the compass will deflect, indicating the presence of a magnetic field circling the wire.

a) On which of the following factor, the direction of deflection of a magnetic needle of a compass
depends when the compass is kept near a current carrying wire ? (1M)
b) Which effect of current causes deflection in a compass needle when it is placed near a current-
carrying wire. (1M)
c) Electricity and magnetism are said to be inter-related to each other. A current carrying conductor has a
magnetic field around it. So, when a compass is brought near to it, we can observe a deflection in the
compass. Similarly, a battery is the source of the electric current. What will be the deflection, when we
bring a compass near a 3 V cell (battery)? Explain. (2M)
( OR )
A magnetic compass needle is placed on the plane of paper near point A in which plane should a
straight current carrying conductor be placed so that it passes through A and there is no change in the
deflection of the magnetic compass. When is the deflection maximum?
