1. Introduction

Sentence transformation is a vital skill that enhances writing clarity, variety, and coherence,
ultimately leading to effective communication. In this writing activity, students will embark on
a journey to explore the techniques of substitution and re-ordering, which are key to mastering
sentence transformation. By substituting words or phrases and rearranging sentence structures
while preserving the original meaning, students will develop valuable tools to elevate their
writing skills. Through captivating examples, grade-level appropriate sentences, and guided
practice, this activity aims to equip students with the ability to express their ideas more
effectively, create engaging sentence structures, and elevate the overall quality of their writing.
By emphasizing the significance of sentence transformation and highlighting its benefits, we
are ready to embark on this transformative learning journey.

General Objective:

• The general objective of this activity is to enhance students' writing skills and their
understanding of sentence structure and vocabulary usage through sentence
transformation techniques.

Specific Objectives:

• Develop Proficiency in Substitution and Re-ordering: Enable students to effectively

substitute words or phrases and re-order the elements within a sentence.
• Expand Vocabulary Repertoire: Encourage students to explore synonyms, antonyms,
and alternative expressions during the substitution process, thereby enriching their
vocabulary and enhancing their ability to choose precise and impactful words.
• Foster Critical Thinking and Collaboration: Promote critical thinking skills and
encourage collaboration and provide opportunities for students to exchange feedback,
share insights, and offer suggestions for further improvement.

The methodology used in this writing activity focuses on a step-by-step approach to enhance
students' sentence transformation skills. The methodology consists of several stages designed
to engage students, provide clear explanations, offer guided practice, and encourage peer
collaboration.
2. Stage 1: Introduction

At the beginning of the activity, it is important to captivate students' attention with a compelling
opening statement that highlights the significance of sentence transformation in writing.

Start by sharing a thought-provoking statement or a real-life example that demonstrates the

impact of sentence transformation on effective communication.

Next, provide a clear explanation of what sentence transformation entails. Communicate to the
students that sentence transformation involves modifying sentences while preserving their
original meaning. Emphasize that this skill is crucial for enhancing writing clarity, variety, and
coherence.

Highlight that this activity will specifically focus on two techniques: substitution and re-
ordering. Explain that substitution involves replacing words or phrases in a sentence while
maintaining grammatical accuracy and coherence, while re-ordering entails rearranging the
words or phrases within a sentence to create a new structure while preserving the original
meaning. Make it clear that by practicing these techniques, students will gain valuable tools to
enhance their writing skills.

Finally, emphasize the benefits of mastering sentence transformation skills. Explain that by
becoming proficient in sentence transformation, students can improve their vocabulary usage,
sentence structure, and overall writing quality. Emphasize that this skill allows them to express
their ideas more effectively, create a variety of sentence structures, and make their writing more
engaging and impactful.

By providing a captivating introduction that highlights the importance of sentence

transformation, explaining the techniques involved, and emphasizing the benefits, students will
be motivated and prepared to engage in the subsequent stages of the activity.

3. Stage 2: Presentation

In this stage, the teacher will provide students with a set of sentences that will serve as the
foundation for their sentence transformations. It is crucial to ensure that the sentences are grade-
level appropriate and encompass a variety of grammatical structures and vocabulary.

To begin, distribute a handout or display the sentences on the board for easy reference.

When selecting the sentences, consider the proficiency level and age of your students. Choose
sentences that align with their current language skills and knowledge. Include a range of
6

sentence types, such as declarative, interrogative, and imperative sentences, as well as different
sentence lengths and complexities.

Ensure that the vocabulary used in the sentences is appropriate for the grade level. Incorporate
both familiar words and some challenging vocabulary to encourage students to expand their
language skills.

By providing a diverse range of sentences that are appropriate for the grade level, the teacher
will offer students ample opportunities to practice sentence transformation using various
grammatical structures and vocabulary.

4. Stage 3: Explanation of Techniques

Explanation of Substitution:

Substitution is a technique used in sentence transformation where words or phrases in a sentence

are replaced with others while maintaining grammatical accuracy and coherence. It involves
finding suitable alternatives that convey the same or similar meaning as the original words or
phrases (Bruton, 2007). Substitution can be done using synonyms, antonyms, or alternative
expressions.

For example, let's consider the original sentence: "The cat chased the mouse."

To demonstrate substitution:

a) We can substitute the word "chased" with synonyms like "pursued" or "hunted." So the
transformed sentence could be: "The cat pursued the mouse."

The key is to ensure that the substituted word or phrase fits grammatically within the sentence
and doesn't change the intended meaning.

Explanation of Re-ordering:

Re-ordering is a technique where the words or phrases within a sentence are rearranged to create
a new structure while preserving the original meaning. It involves changing the word order or
the placement of phrases within the sentence to achieve a different emphasis or flow (McCarthy
and Carter, 2001).

When re-ordering a sentence, it's crucial to maintain logical coherence and grammatical
correctness. The re-ordered sentence should still make sense and convey the same meaning as
the original sentence.
7

Continuing with the example sentence: "The cat chased the mouse at night."

To demonstrate re-ordering:

b) We can re-order the sentence by changing the word order: “At night, the cat chased the
mouse” This re-ordering introduces a different emphasis on the action of chasing.

In this case, the subject ("the cat") remains the same, but the word order is altered to create a
different sentence structure.

The objective of re-ordering is to explore different ways of presenting information within a

sentence while maintaining clarity and coherence.

By using both substitution and re-ordering techniques effectively, students can enhance their
sentence transformation skills and develop a deeper understanding of sentence structure,
vocabulary usage, and sentence variety.

5. Stage 4: Practice

Instructions for Sentence Transformation Worksheet:

1. Distribute a worksheet or handout to each student. The worksheet should include a series of
sentences that students will transform using the techniques of substitution and re-ordering.

2. Provide clear instructions on the worksheet to guide students through the transformation
process. Include examples to illustrate how substitution and re-ordering can be applied.

3. Encourage students to work individually on the worksheet. Allow them sufficient time to
carefully read and transform each sentence.

4. Emphasize the importance of maintaining grammatical accuracy and coherence in their

transformed sentences.

5. As students work on the worksheet, circulate among them to offer support and guidance as
needed. Answer any questions they may have and provide clarifications when necessary.

By providing a structured practice activity, students have the opportunity to apply the
techniques of substitution and re-ordering in a controlled setting. This practice will help
reinforce their understanding of these techniques and improve their sentence transformation
skills. Your support and guidance during this stage will ensure that students receive assistance
when needed and can successfully complete the transformations on the worksheet.

and discuss each other's transformed sentences.

5. After the peer review, bring the class back together for a brief discussion. Ask students to
share any interesting transformations they encountered or any valuable feedback they received
from their partners.

Peer review is an essential part of the learning process as it promotes critical thinking,
collaboration, and self-reflection. It allows students to refine their sentence transformation skills
and gain insights from their peers.
