Today we're looking at similes. Similes are a part of figurative language.


They're used to make our narrative writing more interesting. Similes really
help to give your reader a vivid picture of the setting.

Similes describe things that are like other things using the words like or as.
Here is an example of simple simile’s using like or as!

It's was as hot as an oven outside!

The stars were sparkling like diamonds in the night sky.

"You're as stubborn as an ox!" she shouted.

The thunder was like an explosion in the sky.

Similes in year 4 and 5 need to be extended, we need to add more to the


sentence. Here is an example:

The sun was like a glistening yellow marble in the sky.

Cody’s room smelt like the inside of an old lunch box with tuna inside.
