Introduction and Standards

OCTOBER 15, 2019

Introduction

Introduction to technical Publication:

 Publication is an act of distribution of text or images to the public/users.

 Technical Publication is the process for providing operations and Maintenance data in
the form of Technical writings and Technical Illustrations to the customers/users of the
component.

Why it is required?

 To sell and support the products in these promising new markets manufacturers must
provide training and reference materials with the quality, clarity, and consistency to
enable technicians around the world to understand and maintain highly sophisticated
and complex aerospace components and systems.

 To compete effectively, manufacturers must deliver those materials rapidly and cost-
effectively.

Life Cycle of a Technical publication:

 Inception or Creation (before the aircraft flies)

Before the actual aircraft flies or a component is delivered, the manuals are written based on the
latest Engineering drawing and documents related to that component or aircraft.

 Revision (every 3/6 months)

As per the agreement with the customer the manuals are revised during regular interval of time
to keep the manual in line with the latest engineering data.

 Temporary Revisions (TR’s) (between revisions)

Any correction in the manual or an update that requires immediate incorporation is

communicated to the user and incorporated in manuals as TR. It is a single page or two page
change that should be incorporated in the very next revision.

In Case of web publications daily revision are done and no TRs are required.

Major Manuals:

 Illustrated Parts Catalogue (AIPC):

The AIPC contains all those individual line-replaceable units such as light bulbs, sockets,
lenses, caps, seals, bearings, screens, screws, filters, electrical connectors, circuit cards,
relays, pulleys, fittings, brackets, external lines.

The AIPC includes all components and/or parts where maintenance practices allow replacement
of the components rather than replacement of the next higher assembly & aircraft parts.

 Aircraft Maintenance Manuals (AMM):

Provides system descriptions and operation as well as instructions and procedures for
maintaining the aircraft systems

Provides coverage to the level of Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) and do not contain information
relating to the overhaul of components or the repair of the aircraft structure

AMMs are considered Instructions for Continued Airworthiness “ICA” by Regulatory authorities
and identified as such in the A/C Type Certificate

 Component Maintenance Manual (CMM):

CMMs provide component technical and repair (overhaul) data for A/C components. Procedures
contained within a CMM are intended for work on the A/C component in a workshop
environment. It contains an illustrated parts lists (IPL) for the component covered.

 Wiring Diagram Manual (WDM):

WDM contains wiring diagrams, schematics, block diagrams, equipment lists and major
component locations.

 Structural Repair Manual (SRM):

The SRM provides information and procedures for performing approved repairs to the A/C
structure. It identifies the material of each component. It also provides the limits of tolerable
Damage and the permitted methods and procedures for repair.

 Non Destructive Testing Manuals (NDTM):

Describes methods and procedures to ascertain the structural integrity of aircraft component.
It lists the mechanical and physical data for all parts in the inspection area.
It Provides procedures for performing eddy current, X-ray and dye penetrant inspections and
gives information such as location, purpose of inspection, equipment required and procedures
to perform applicable tests.

AMTOSS:

The Aircraft Maintenance Task Oriented Support System (AMTOSS) has been designed to
improve the organization of the Aircraft Manuals.

AMTOSS is based on the concept of using a standard and unique numbering system that is an
expansion of the ATA Chapter - Section - Subject numbering system as well as a function code
and additional unique identifiers.

The AMTOSS system is a logical approach to organizing tasks and subtasks. The purpose of
incorporating the AMTOSS numbering system is to provide a means for automated sorting,
retrieval, and management of digital data.

Functional Codes (Element Four):

The fourth element in the AMTOSS code numerically defines the maintenance function
being performed.

Some commonly used functional codes are:

000-Removal
400-Installation
610-Servicing
710-operational test
720-functional test
820-Adjustment.

Counter (Element Five):

The fifth element is a three-digit number used to create unique numbers for all tasks or
subtasks which are similarly numbered through the first four elements. Tasks shall be
numbered from 801 through 999. Subtasks shall be numbered 001 through 800.

In the event that more than 199 task numbers are required, alphabetical characters shall
be used after the third digit of element No. 5.

Identifier (Element Six):

A three position alpha-numeric sixth element allows for identification differences in
configurations, methods and techniques, variations of standard practice applications,

Common questions

Powered by AI

iSpec 2200 improves the organization and retrieval of aerospace technical information by allowing for electronic and paper-based formats, which facilitate easier data retrieval. Unlike ATA Spec 100, which is limited to hardcopy print media, iSpec 2200 utilizes markup language, enabling more efficient data storage and linking of internal and external resources. It also provides a more granular level of task segregation compared to the page-block level of ATA Spec 100, enhancing clarity and usability .

Component Maintenance Manuals (CMM) differ from Aircraft Maintenance Manuals (AMM) as they provide specific technical and repair data for individual aircraft components, including detailed procedures for overhauls in a workshop environment. CMMs typically contain illustrated parts lists for components, whereas AMMs focus on system descriptions and maintenance procedures without delving into overhauls or repairs beyond Line Replaceable Units. This distinction allows CMMs to offer more detailed component-level instructions compared to the broader maintenance focus of AMMs .

A lack of standardization in aerospace technical publications could lead to misinterpretations and inconsistent maintenance practices, risking aircraft safety and operational efficiency. Non-standardized documents can result in increased training time, errors in component handling, and ineffective communication between international maintenance crews. These issues ultimately lead to higher operational costs and potential regulatory compliance problems, negatively impacting manufacturer competitiveness and reliability .

Temporary Revisions (TRs) function as interim updates to technical publications, allowing for immediate incorporation of critical changes or corrections before the next scheduled revision. They act as stop-gap measures to communicate crucial updates to users, ensuring manuals remain accurate and reflective of current engineering data. TRs are usually single or double-page documents added between major revisions to maintain document currency and integrity .

The use of Simplified English in aerospace technical publications benefits the industry by enhancing the clarity and comprehensibility of maintenance and operational documents. Simplified English reduces the potential for misunderstandings among international technicians by using clear, consistent language, thus improving safety and efficiency in aircraft maintenance and operation processes .

The key elements of the AMTOSS coding system include the expansion of the ATA Chapter-Section-Subject numbering system with functional codes and additional unique identifiers. Functional codes define the maintenance function (e.g., removal, installation, servicing), and two other elements allow for task and subtask uniqueness. The system supports automated sorting and retrieval, facilitating efficient organization and management of extensive and complex aircraft maintenance tasks, which is vital for maintaining operational readiness and compliance .

Manufacturers might choose AMTOSS for organizing aircraft manuals due to its logical approach to task classification and improved data management. The system expands the ATA Chapter-Section-Subject numbering with additional functional codes and unique identifiers, enabling better automated sorting, retrieval, and management of digital data. This structure supports efficient task and subtask organization, which is crucial in complex aerospace maintenance operations .

The Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) plays a crucial role in providing system descriptions, operational instructions, and maintenance procedures for aircraft systems. It covers up to the Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) level, ensuring technicians have detailed guidelines for system upkeep. However, it does not include information on component overhauls or structural repairs, limiting its scope to general maintenance rather than in-depth technical repairs or modifications .

The benefits of incorporating web publications over traditional printed manuals include the ability to conduct daily revisions, instant dissemination of updates, cost reduction in printing and distribution, and enhanced accessibility. Web-based manuals can be updated quickly, ensuring users have access to the most current information without the delay associated with physical updates, thus improving the responsiveness to changes in engineering data .

Standardization of technical publications is crucial in the aerospace industry because it ensures clarity, consistency, and quality across maintenance and operations documentation. This standardization enables technicians worldwide to effectively understand and maintain complex aerospace components and systems, facilitating safe and efficient operations. Moreover, standardized documents enhance the rapid and cost-effective delivery of technical information, which is essential for manufacturers to compete effectively in global markets .
