Internal choice is provided in one of these sub-parts.
37 Mendel used a number of contrasting visible characters of garden peas – round/ wrinkled
seeds, tall/short plants, white/violet flowers and so on. He took pea plants with different
characteristics – a tall plant and a short plant, produced progeny from them. In this first
generation, or F1 progeny – no ‘medium-height’ plants. All plants were tall. This meant
that only one of the parental traits were seen, not some mixture of two. The second
generation or F2, progeny of the F1 tall plants are not all tall. Instead, one quarter of them
are short. This indicates that both the tallness and shortness traits were inherited in the
plants, but only the tallness trait was expressed.
(i) Why did Mendel select a pea plant for his experiments? 1

38 The metals in the middle of the activity series such as iron, zinc, lead, copper, etc., are
moderately reactive. These are usually present as sulphides or carbonates in nature. It is
easier to obtain a metal from its oxide, as compared to its sulphides and carbonates.
Therefore, prior to reduction, the metal sulphides and carbonates must be converted into
metal oxides. The sulphide ores are converted into oxides by heating strongly in the
presence of excess air. The carbonate ores are changed into oxides by heating strongly in
limited air.
(i) What is Calcination? 1
(ii) Give a suitable chemical reaction for the process of Roasting. 1
(iii) Name the process of converting metal oxide to metal? 1
(iv)Name some other reducing agent which can be used to extract metal from metal oxide? 1
(OR)

39 The lenses form different types of images when object placed at different locations. When
a ray is incident parallel to the principal axis, then after refraction, it passes through the
focus or appears to come from the focus. When a ray goes through the optical centre of the
lens, it passes without any deviation. If the object is placed between focus and optical
centre of the convex lens, erect and magnified image is formed. As the object is brought
closer to the convex lens from infinity to principal focus, the image moves away from the
convex lens from focus to infinity. Also, the size of image goes on increasing and the
image is always real and inverted. A concave lens always forms a virtual, erect and
diminished image irrespective of the position of the object.
(i)Where is the location of image, formed by a convex lens when the object is at infinity? 1
(ii) When an object is placed in front of a concave lens, where is the image formed? 1
(iii) Where is the image formed by a convex lens when the object is placed at its focus? 1
(iv) When the object is placed at 2F in front of convex lens, where is the image formed? 1
(OR)
Compare the size of the image with object when the object is placed between infinity
and optical centre of a concave lens.

conventions called the New Cartesian Sign Convention. In this convention, the pole (P) of
the mirror is taken as the origin. The principal axis of the mirror is taken as the x -axis of
the coordinate system. In a spherical mirror, the distance of the object from its pole is
called the object distance (u). The distance of the image from the pole of the mirror is
called the image distance (v). Magnification produced by a spherical mirror gives the rela-

trolytes is carried by the movement of ions rather than the movement
of electrons. The solid conductors inserted into the liquid are called
electrodes, the one with a positive charge is called the anode (because
it attracts anions) and the one with the negative charge is called the
cathode.

39 We know that a battery or a cell is a source of electrical energy. The chemical 4
reaction within the cell generates the potential difference between its two
terminals that sets the electrons in motion to flow the current through a resis-
tor or a system of resistors connected to the battery. A part of the source ener-
gy in maintaining the current may be consumed into useful work. We often ob-
serve this in our everyday life. For example, an electric fan becomes warm if
used continuously for longer time etc. On the other hand, if the electric circuit
is purely resistive, that is, a configuration of resistors only connected to a bat-
tery: the source energy continually gets dissipated entirely in the form of heat.
(Given R1 = 2 Ω, R2 = 4 Ω, R3 = 5 Ωand R4 = 1Ω)

resistance between M and N
